Ted seems to have an odd-shaped back! He's not a table-top cob but standard wide and even extra wide trees do not fit - too narrow behind withers and bridge along his back. The usual cob saddles and my lovely WH saddle aren't forward-cut enough for me to jack up my irons to sit his huge scary leaps! Any advice v gratefully received! Has anyone tried Duett saddles?

Is he a cob or likely to end up much narrower?

I used a wintec / bates for my youngster as he want from XW to M as he got fitter. Not the best fits in the world, but in this case was worth padding up and using them as otherwise anything purchased would be redundant.

Thanks, haven't tried made-to-measure yet, was concerned he would change shape again and I'd be back to square one! Sounds like it would be well worth a try though, as we are going nowhere fast!!

Yes thanks for that, saddler has seen him and raised eyebrows (!!) and then suggested either I try a Thorowgood cob GP saddle (xxw!!) or H&C GP, and just jump small fences... Easier said than done on a 16.2hh green youngster!!

He was bought last year as a 16hh middleweight but has filled out somewhat and is now nearer 16.2hh and verging on heavyweight, but isn't a typical cob type. He's gone from medium-wide to extra wide in just over a year (admittedly with addition of quite a few extra pounds of lard!), and quite possibly with fittening through the winter may slim down... I did try a Wintec in the hope that it would adjust with him, but even with an xw tree it's no good at all. Hmmm....!

The only other thing I can suggest is a wow - no to everyone's taste, but these have some seriously wide headplates and means that you can adjust as needed

I think made to measure would be throwing your money away as doubt he will stay the same shape.

Agree with cotswoldsj re MTM - Thorowgood can be a better bet for really wides. Some of them look as tho they have been totally squashed, they are so wide!! They come with adj gullet plates & fish inserts so you can really tweak them until horse has settled down & stopped changing
The T'good Robert Whitaker may be a better bet if you are needing to jump anything over 3' tho'

Thanks for all great advice! Problem seems to be that even Thorowgood Whitaker jump saddle unlikely to fit as is not designed for wide horses specifically...apparently. The only really wide jumping saddle I can find that might work, and that I don't have to take out a 2nd mortgage on, is Duett, but I can only find reviews from USA so maybe thy aren't big over here... Perhaps I'm destined to ride forever in my WH saddle and stick to showing!!

I tried for well over a year to get a jumping saddle for Bodey (he is an XXW), I tried everything from a Prestige to a Wintec (all fitted my a MS). There just aren’t out there, without going down the made to measure route (which if they are young could work out very expensive). I ended up with a Thorowgood Cob T4, which is a GP. Sorry that’s no help at all, but just thought I would let you know my experience.

Thanks, no worries, sorry to hear you've had a struggle too, it does get expensive - I now have 3 saddles, 2 of which I'm trying unsuccessfully to sell!!

It’s is nightmare, isn’t it!? I have been though at least 6 saddles for Bodey from the age of 3 to 6. Just hope he doesn’t get any wider as really will have to get something made to measure.
It’s gutting because the Fjord as a lovely Albion with lovely big knee rolls and really wish I could have that on the cob, but not to be.

Thanks, the H&C wide seat has been recommended to me, just wasn't sure it would have enough room for my long legs! Looking at the link tho, it does seem worth a try, even more so if I can get hold of a secondhand one...prob like gold dust!!

If you're planning on buying new then you could probably get most saddle companies to make your saddle to spec.

Go for a seat and panels that suit your horses then ask them to put extra long flaps on, or jump flaps. If you spoke nicely to Thorowgood I'm sure they could do you an xxwide cob tree'd saddle with jump flaps. The seat won't be classic jumping (though they are fairly flat anyways) but should do the job. Shouldn't cost you much extra either (they aren't hugely expensive as standard anyways)

Great, thanks for that. I've just had a reply from T'good actually, and apparently their jump saddle is made on the same tree as their cob saddle so there's hope...!!
