Please help...very concerned about my welsh mare of 13yrs. Within the last 24 hrs a large swelling has appeared on the left side of her neck. I first noticed this last night and called the vet who didn't think it urgent enough to come out straight away but said he would come at first light.

By this morning Lady was laid on her side in the field unable to bear weight on her forelegs. After some time she managed to stand and was given bute and antibiotics by the vet. He checked her for colic symptoms; she was fine on this score. The vet took bloods and suggested that she might have been kicked or bitten (although there was no visible signs of a wound) and said that if so the CK enzyme would be present.

The bloods came back this afternoon and showed no signs of the CK enzyme. The vet was honest in saying he has no idea what the swelling might be and will do a biopsy tomorrow.

Lady has perked up a little this evening, I think the bute has helped no end but the swelling has not decreased at all.

Does anyone have any ideas? Really very worried that she has gone downhill so very quickly.

Being perfectly honest, I haven't got a clue what wrong with your mare but what type of vet did you have? Equine specialist or an all rounder? When you've had a horse go downhill that quickly I would recommend that you only get an equine specialist as you do find some of the general veterinary medice vets don't know enough to deal with anything too complicated as they don't see enough horses. The fact that she was unable to stand is concerning & if the mare isn't looking well tomorrow I'd be tempted to ask for a second opinion.

Ditto what panda said. If my vet was not pulling his finger out and finding out what was wrong with my horse if it couldnt stand up, I would change vet.

The vet is a large animal vet but he has been coming to see her fo the last 10 years and so knows her well, however, he doesn't specialise in equines so thank you I will take that on board.

Could your mare have run in to something in the paddock (neck swelling) and or wrenched herself in the process (stiff and difficulty getting up) My mare had a slip and fall in the field a few years ago, skid marks and disturbed ground marked the spot and the next day she was in a terribe state, very stiff and had trouble getting up and dragging her hinds, loads of pulled muscles i suppose. She improved on bute over several days. Good luck and welcome to the forum

could it be an abscese from rolling on a foreign body as this happened to my yearling he was quite poorly and had large swelling on his neck and tuyrned up he had surgery to drain a massive abscese just a though

Had EXACTLY this situation with a 28 yr old gelding. We really thought we were going to lose him

The vet thought he had been pecked by a bird and got an infection that overwhelmed his immune system causing the body to start to shut down

He was very poorly, had loads of antibiotics and the lump turned into an absess that was very awkward to drain ( my OH made a stainless steel pipe to go into the hole so you could flush it with the hose

).
Once the absess healed the old boy was fine and we only lost him at 32 when his heart failed- Good Luck <<VIBES>>
