Hello everyone, I have a really sad story and wondered if anyone can help. I have a friend whose husband died 6 weeks ago and she desparately needs to rehome his old horse. The horse is 22 years old but still in light work about 15.2 hh grey mare. The awful thing is that he suffered a heart attack whilst freeing the horse from some fencing it had got stuck in and died in the field. My friend is struggling as she herself is not well and her husband had always looked after the horse. Can anyone suggest any charities or offer this horse a home?

Charities seem to be full ATM. Maybe advertise the mare for loan and that way she could keep in touch and hopefully ensure it's welfare. You could mention what area you are in on here and a bit more about the mare. Someone may well be interested.

I am in sussex. The mare is very sweet and easy to do, 22 years old, approx 15.2, lightweight, lives out but could probably do with coming in through winter as she gets older, she has always been used for hacking since my friends have owned her and is sensible to ride. If anyone wants any specific information let me know and I'll try and find out.

thats a sad story..i am sure some of the horse welfare charities would help out...
i live in ireland so wouldnt know any off hand buti am sure you could find someone to help out..good luck and keep us posted

Hi Dizzymare I am sorry for your friends loss. It must have come as a huge shock to her. Please could you pm me some more info as to where in Sussex you are. I am in Kent but know of a few people, one of whom runs an equine charity and may be able to help if you aren't too far away

I think there is a Facebook page for Sussex horse community, might be worth posting on there as local to you.

So sad she has to go and do the horse every day looking at the place where her husband died!! She says her daughter in law had contacted some charities for her but don't think she tried hard enough, I have some numbers and I'll call them tomorrow. Fingers crossed! She has talked about having her put down but she can't bear to do it as her husband died helping the horse, she was left with 2 others but they were young so easy to home.
