My mum got me a 5month old gypsy vanner cob today, I've been riding and looking after horses all my life but I've never had a foal so I was wondering:
●what to feed him
●if I can train him (get him used to being led)
●do's and dont's
I know I cant ride him until he's 2-4

My mum had to buy him in a rush because he was being neglected, if nobody bought him his previous owners were going to leave him in a feild through winter

I know it's the holidays but come on.... I hope someone far more experienced with foals comes along soon but 5 months is a little young to be weaned. Someone who has never had a foal before and wants to know how to 'train him' sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. And for god's sake 2 is far too young to ride him. I suggest you enlist someone at your yard who knows about horses to help you.

Move him onto full livery at a yard where there are others his age to play with and a YO that knows how to handle youngsters
Get the vet out to geld him, vaccs etc
Buy the Foal to five years book and get reading

Feed him plenty of good quality hay.
Handle him regularly, picking up feet, leading etc.

Foals require endless patience so keep this in mind when teaching him anything.
Foals are great at getting their tiny hooves caught in things or finding wire etc to get caught up in so be extra careful to check potential hazards in field and stable.

Turnout with other youngsters is a must. As for feed, hay, grass and a good vitamin/mineral supplement as long as his weight is good.

Don't think of riding him 'till he is 3 years old.

He needs to go and live in a herd with other youngsters and just be a horse.
He probably wont need extra feed apart from a general broad range suppliment and maybe some hay.

Just get him used to being touched, lead. Brushed etc

Put in on a yard with an experienced person/ people.

for god's sake - are you a troll?????

You must be

Get a vet first thing, if you're not experienced he could have any number of things wrong with him, and may not even be 5 months yet. Your vet will advice on what best to feed him, whether he needs any sort of milk pellets. The younger a foal is the harder it is for them to digest hay hence he may need extra feed. You can teach him to lead, tie up, pick his feet up, have a groom, have his testicles handled(your vet will thank you when it's time to geld) but if you've never been around youngsters then get advice from a local stud or find a yard that can help you with youngsters and preferably keep him on that yard or stud with other youngsters for company and a good nanny horse to teach him manners. Very sensible of you to ask for advice.
