Hi, My horse's feet are terrible, he is being shod every 4 weeks. He has been on cornucresine hoof supplement for about a year and although they've improved a small amount i am sure there are better supplements on the market but i have no idea which one to choose. Please can anybody give me some advice?

I use farriers formula - which is helping but you have to persevere for at least 6 months until you see results. I use this in conjunction with life data hoof disinfectant which eliminates bacteria that breaks down the hoof wall, plus kevin bacons hoof dressing which is water based & keeps the hooves moist! All expensive but all helps!

i got methisal from the vets to help brackens feet as forces the hoof to grow healthy! is around £20 per pot and you only use 1 scoop a day does last ages the tub! its recomended for lamanitics as well! only downside(if you can call it that!!) is you need the farrier more often! but since bracken has been on it her feet are 200 times better to the point she is now shod and 12 months ago i had no chance!

Maybe its just me...but every 4 weeks seems fairly often...that will be tough on his feet even if they were in imaculate condition

Mine has just gone down to every 4 weeks, and I have been back and forth over this. I was lead to believe by previous farrier that if he was shod this frequently, his hooves would just go to pieces with all the nailing. However, left longer at this time of year, the nails tear through the wall as they are growing and the wall would be destroyed so he couldn't get shoes on him

. Alternatively, shoes would become loose and break off half the wall with them when he lost them.

My new farrier (who is fab!

) tries to keep him at 5 weeks, but has schedued the next one at 4 weeks as his hooves are growing so fast. He has told me to call him out as soon as I see any problems developing so he can come up & make corrections / re-fit in order to save the wall. Seems to be working as he still has 4 shoes on at the moment!

My old TB had awful feet, when i first got him he was being shod every 3 weeks (as the shoes didnt stay on any longer) my farrier got him up to five weeks after a year or so and we had him on BOSS and a biotin supplement, but think it was the BOSS that made the difference, and much cheaper than all these special supplements. Before this we had tried farriers formula and formula 4 feet without success

My old horse has typical thoroughbred feet and has done all his life. I get a supplement called Biometh Z from the vets. His feet are OK at the moment and have been for a while but it takes a while for these supplements to kick in. Persevere you will get there in the end!!

It is obviously the nail holes that are causing the problem - have you thought about stick on shoes for a while to let his hoof naturally strengthen? My pony used to have terrible feet - the nails would come loose and then the shoes would fall off after 3 weeks or so, taking pieces of horn with them. He has stick on shoes and has really hard feet now. Might be worth discussing with your farrier - but they are expensive.

I used to use Farriers Formula and yes it was fantastic, but with 25 horses it was proving way too expensive for me so I looked into something else.....Black Oil Sunflower Seeds - absolutely fantastic for feet and overall condition and shine. Plus a twentieth of the price. I've used them for 2 years now and the have kept all of my horses feet in better order than they were previously.

Horace used to have shockingly bad feet 4 years ago or so, crumbled liek anything was always losing shoes/lame etc

deffo farriers formula
