When I fell off on Sunday I was adamant that I hadn't hit my head so the hospital believed me and didn't x-ray my head or do any brain tests.

I woke up on Monday to find a huge lump on the back of my head and when I got to the yard in the evening I found a crack in the back of my hat. This was a good hat and I've never even seen a mark on one before so goodness knows how hard I hit my head.

This really isn't a "poor me" post but a warning to everyone else. From now on if I take a heavy fall I'm not going to assume I haven't hit my head unless someone was there to see otherwise. Everything is so disorientating that you don't always know what you've hit. I'm fine but it could have been serious.

PLEASE GET YOUR HEAD CHECKED IF YOU HAVE A SERIOUS FALL

*hobbles down off soapbox*

A couple of years back my friend had quite an uneventful fall off a 14hh mare (so not a great height) we thought she landed on her back, turns out she had also hit her and head and on getting back to the yard she took her hat off and it had completely snapped through the middle, again not a crappy hat, a very good quality hat.

Glad you are ok.

My friend fell off recently and thought that as she had landed on her bum,all would be well although she knew that she had also rolled backwards. She got back on and rode, then mucked out, drove her car went out. The next day she felt ill and 48 hrs after the fall was admitted to hospital with a suspected broken neck. Fortunately scans etc showed that there was no serious injury but over a month later she still can't move her head & neck properly. It's always best to get checked out.

Great post and i hope lots of people read it and take note. I had a fall off a 14.2, landing on my (well padded) bum. I had no inkling that my head was involved at all. It was only over the next few days when my friend who was with me said things like 'when I got on him after you came off....' that I realised I had 'lost' a huge chunk of what happened that day. I still haven't remembered everything that happened that day, I have replaced my hat though.

Usually I just assume I hit my head as I always do!

THe girl who is ridin gmy horse came off on monday and she did heit her head. Repeated times. She is feeling rather ill now.

I need to question her about it as one of my hats is missing and it looks a bit like the one she ie wearing in the pictures.

And to add to the boring worthiness of the original post, I'd like to remind everyone to replace their hat if it has made contact with the ground, even if it appears to be ok.
The damage to hats isn't always as visible as a big crack, but any weakness will reduce future protection.
S :D

Very good point.

A friend of mine came off and hit her head, she didnt go to the docs until days later because she had started to get headaches, by the 3rd day she was in hospital with a fractured skull, a crack down her back of her skull in the same place has the crack in her jockey skull cap but obviously the hat took most of the blow, if it wasn't for the hat, she would of been dead.
