Has anyone got any tips for keeping a 5 year old calm when ariving at the hunt please?
First time hunting this week and I know what to expect!
I have a heavy Cob who goes nuts when he hacks with other horses let alone going hunting, but I have been promising a friend I would go since November and I cannot keep letting her down.
He bucks, spins and jogs on the spot when he meets other horses, he calms after an hour or so but by then I have lost the use of my arms and my thighs have collapsed, plus people must think I am the village idiot who is providing the days entertainment!
Any tips would be most welcome.

Maybe hire something to go with your friend!! It doesn't sound like your boy will settle to hunting. Other than that park a little way from the meet and hack there - we did that when i first took my three year old back in december! some of the calmers work too!! good luck let us know how you get on!

hacking there (if he's fit enough) is a good idea IMO. OH hacks donkey to the meet if it's less than an hour away, otherwise he gets a lift from a friend.

I know it's not very sociable, but make him DO something, rather than making him NOT do something. Find a less populated corner and walk 20m circles. Be Positive with him. When you ask him to stand and he does reward him, pat him, release the contact. He'll learn that its better to stand still than walk 20m circles!

Have fun!

My retired mare ran on adrenaline permanently on the hunting field, bounced and pulled all day and not a little lady to keep hold of. I tried Nupafeed syringes for the last day of legal hunting as I knew so many people would be out and they worked brilliantly, she was so much more receptive. It cost around £12 for 2 syringes and was well worth it.
