Strange request I know, sorry!

I ask because I have always had Haflingers and they have always been good doers, resulting in less than perfect figures and quite cresty. My Haffy now is worked much more and his diet watched closely. He is now developing some lovely muscles and his neck feels really firm and lean. But someone on my yard commented on him needing more weight as his neck looked scrawny :/ I will see if I can find a decent photo, but what should the neck of a horse of a good weight actually look like?

I think its back to the old, people only seeing fat ponies these days so a thinner one is an unusual sight? I dont know. Would be interested to see and hear your thoughts as im a little worried he's too thin now :/

Thanks

Not a great pic I apologise but shows what I mean about his neck. The muscles on the top are good and firm and definitely not fat. Its more the underside. It is good and firm and to me, looks defined. Others have said thin

Gorgeous!!
Thank you! Your's definitely looks better now, and certainly wouldn't say his neck is scrawny, I think people got used to seeing him fat and assumed that was the norm!!

I so like the grey horse, nicest type I have seen for ages. Have you done any workers with him.

Thank you! No not yet, he's only 5, got him Feb this year so plan to do some next year, he's excelling himself as a real all-rounder!

For me, his neck now is not scrawny - its more like it should be! The more work you will do then he will develop more muscle. The before picture was just cresty IMO.

Keep doing what you are doing - and ignore the doubters :)

Thanks all. I will carry as we are then and ignore the negative comments :)

But please feel free to post pics of your gorgeous neddies x

This is my Haff:

I think some of it is just that people are used to Haflingers (and other native types) being quite portly in statue, so when they see an athletic version it 'looks wrong'.

This is my boy's grandad, and bearing in mind he is a stallion so has his crest, there really isn't as much meat on him that some people think there should be :D

They are being bred to be more athletic now, the fatter ones tend to be more Flemish/Germanic stock where they use them for different reasons..

He looks better for his weigh loss, and providing he still fits in the elusive 2.5-3/5 then kudos to you :)

Hi Haffiesrock he looks great and very like my own performance Haffie Ellie. You are doing the right thing keeping him fit and managing his weight as my girl was an obese field ornament before her last owner sorted her out and that feels awful given her love for cantering and fast work.

Love the grey too and your lad nugget now I can see piccies.

I know nothing about Haffys, but would say he looks great, much better than before. My BWP has a seriously beefy neck especially for a mare, but there is certainly no fat.

I havent got many pics of my old mare but i think you can see enough of her neck in this one

My big boy has always had a bit of a scrawny neck, this was at its biggest i think

This is what it looks like most of the time, he is half giraffe so it always seems to looks long and skinny *sigh*

I think your boy looks fine now. I will admit that my mare looked better with more neck due to her being a cob but it wasnt from fat, just work.

OP, your Haffy looks much better now, ignore those who say he's getting too thin, they must just be used to chubby horses. According to someone on my yard I apparently starve my mare, just because she is not longer a heffalump!
