PLEASE READ: HORRENDOUS CONDITION OF HORSES

Gingerwitch - nylon bridles - They are mosting webbing but harder than the nylon head collars they have in the UK. I did get through them with my hole punch but it was a bit of a slow process!! I am glad you understand what I meant - it's hard to explain! It's so hard building a rapport with the locals and we do not want to knock down bridges by creating a dangerous situation should we take their curb bit for a snaffle etc. It's kind of easier to see once it's been explained!

you need something warm if its "proper" nylon - can you get some other information, a link to what its made of etc - I am sure the great knowledge of HHO would come up with something if we do a thread on it on HHO ...

i suppose the normal leather punches are no good ? and a bradall (leather maker thing) is too small ?

I took a normal leather punch out with me and it worked with some degree of wiggling but I don't know if you would need to as you say use something hot on it afterwards! The horses have such small heads out there - all pony/cob bridles would fit but full size is huge on them!

i have quite a few pelhams lying about- one is a happy mouth one, and i think i have a couple of steel mullen mouth pelhams.

i wouldnt want to ride my arab in asnaffle... so can see why they wouldnt want to ride their stallys in them either! ;)

should i take the curb chains off before sending then? need to have a root through my "stuff" and find the address to send to.

i only just came across this group a few days ago, and think they are amazing. We were considering going to egypt on honeymoon... but i think i'd just go with a suitcase of horsey stuff and abandon calum...

I personally think that pelhams, weymouths etc are the way to go. A lot of the draft horses have snaffles etc in their mouths and some are steered by the noseband - it's quite cool to see! Whereabouts in Egypt are you going? I can tell you lots about it! It's a fabulous country and I adore it. Check out our FB page as well www.facebook.com/cairofarrier We were very lucky and had oodles of support from HHO when we went out and received MASSES of awesome goodies to take with us. I took the curb chains etc off as they don't have them on their bits and it's easier I think to just swap their bit for a similar one and not having to faff with curb chains. The biggest problem with Egypt is the lack of postal system. I don't actually think there is one! Couriers such as DHL, FedEx etc go there but there are not any post boxes or anything. I know ex-pats who cannot do Christmas Presents, order from Amazon etc as they never receive what they have purchased!! Most stuff has to be taken out in your own luggage and distributed as you see fit. You are completely right about you wouldn't want to ride your Arab in a snaffle so why should we force our snaffle views on the Egyptians! They have very small mouths as well and a lot of the chunky egg butts are too much for them. I would like to spend some time and watch them breaking in their horses to get a better understanding of how they do it and why. Again it all comes down to time off work - in the ideal world I would like to be full time with the charity!

yeah, she has a very small mouth, as does her daughter i have noticed! if i rode in a snaffle i'd be tanked off with, and have two black eyes and a broken nose... :p the main reason i put a pelham on her and never looked back!

we haven't decided if we are definately going to egypt- we are still trying to decide, but i would really love to go- so any suggestions are most welcome! We got married just over 3 weeks ago, but are not planning an escape until jan- beat the winter blues!

even if we do not go, i am planning on trying to get some things together to post to pfk's norwegian address... when i find it! i will look up your link also-

i would love to go out and help, but its just not practical at this time in my life- i will help with supplies as often as i can though!

I will ask if our local tack shops would do a collection bin in the shop like hubby does in the opticians for eye aid to third world countries.

What would you chose ideally and what sort of sizes?

These people are amazing and do such fantastic work how they face that day in day out without having a nervous breakdown I will never no. I wish they were more widely known and supported.

I wonder if someone clever could do a new thread with a link to this one - and ask if any tack shop owners would do a "bit" collection.....

maybe a "Do your BIT for equines this ....Christams...
every BIT helps...
(especially pelhams, driving bits) etc"

this is a good idea although I have just sent 3 snaffles to Gambia horse and donkey trust http://www.gambiahorseanddonkey.org.uk/Pages/bitappeal.htm

I wish TFC would sticky some of these details so we could try and help some of these poor horses, with so much traffic the threads move so quick they're not seen by enough people.

Yes, probably, was so gobsmacked I rushed to get the website on here. Whatever, he has clearly gone through hell. Look at the eye ...

The grey being ridden is Prince Fluffy Kareem, the one and only.

The grey with the badly damaged eye is their latest foster. His name is Marzug and he is doing really well. Marte hopes to buy him but the owner has not been seen since he dumped him at their stables.

I regularly donate and have sent an extra donation for Marzug - EVERY penny helps no matter how small :)

H+H could start by doing an article about PFK and the wonderful help they provide free of charge to Cairo's working horses.

Dorothy Brooke started The Brooke Hospital with a letter........

Sorry, got all muddled in my hurry to post. Don't take my word for it, go have a look, whatever my muddled little head is like it knows they are doing a very, very worthwhile job out there in very, very difficult conditions.

I wondered, do you know where to contact for those rubber wrist bands, perhaps I / we could get some made up to sell, all profits to the charity. If anyone can help me as I haven't a clue where to start, I will enquire.

Count me in Archie - suggestions for me are to approach Robinsons and ask for a bit of support, ask our local independant tack shops to have a "bit donate" bank - i will happily co-ordinate for Staffordshire and the West Midlands - fgs a few bits could mak all the differance

We would also love some exposure and fund raising ideas and help for Cairo Farrier if you can throw us into the mix we would greatly appreciate it. We became registered as a charity here in the UK (even though we work abroad) a couple of months ago and are planning a large assault back to Giza in the new year. Every penny counts and the cost of shipping etc is huge. We realised from our first trip that a lot of the injuries the working horses in Cairo sustain are from their feet being in such poor condition. No one has been educated in hoof care there and they have learnt from their Fathers, Grandfathers etc. We have been a little quiet on our facebook page as we are in the process of building our website etc. and developing a strategy to move forwards. I do work full time, have two horses at home and launching some new projects so any help would be fabulous.

I have already messaged Martin Clunes via FB but fear it will never get a response. Does anyone have any contact details for Martin or Leona that may have a chance of getting to them, or anyone in the public eye who may be able to help for that matter.

Many thanks

AH, of course if I can help, I will. Am trying to establish some contacts from someone in the public eye but its hard as I seem to be hitting brick walls and am sure the requests do not actually get through to them. Shame and annoying.

Had an email from Robinsons. The relevant department will contact me if they are interested.

No reply from MC :(

Would Twitter give a better chance of reply? I do not have it, never used it, but if someone can assist me I will send more requests.

My email is currently not working so am unable to send or read emails. Any other ideas?
