If you are a horsey person please make as many people as you can aware that if they are selling, loaning or giving away companion or light hack horses or ponies to be very very careful as they are being sold on for money as sound riding and or broodmares putting peoples lives at risk as well as the horses.

I now have first hand experience of this and lukily I caught the cow before it dammaged my horse lukily I was careful in writing my contract and I was able to take the horse back other people may not be so lucky due to an accident ppl were able to link me to the horse and saved her life this will not be the case for others PLEASE BE AWARE LOOK AFTER OUR ANIMALS BEST INTRESTS !!!!!!!!!

Loaning and giving away are different, i know.. but if you sell a horse, it's nothing to do with you!! it's up to the new owner to do as they please with!!

well when we sell our dogs, the new owners sign a contract and if they do anything against that contract then we can take them to court and have dog back so i think with the correct legal advice and caontract then one could get their horse back if needed

Agree 100%. Anyone who has an older horse, or a horse fit only for light work is limited to loaning it if they want ANY control over its future. If you sell a horse (even if you give it away) the person you have sold or given it to becomes the one with the rights to do as they please with it. You may have sold it to your best friend - but with the best will in the world if their circumstances change who's to say where the horse might end up.
I know sometimes even loan agreements are taken advantage of but at least with something in writing you've got the law on your side.

I'm only making aware and passing on the message that there are lots of scammers out there if you want whats best for your horse when it comes a day when there health could be at risk either through injury or age or behavioral problems KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THEM!! or within your grasp some people are only out to make money and although will come accross as the best thing that could ever happen to your horse they dont give a flying whatever.

PLEASE JUST BE AWARE AND PASS THE MESSAGE ON LET's LOOK AFTER OUR HORSES AND PONIES BEST INTERESTS AND FIND A WAY TO GET AN INFORCEMENT ON THIS AND STOP IT SOMEHOW!!!!

maybe if people weren't so quick to just give horses away just because they have gotten old or unridable, just because they dont have to want to admit it would be better pts or they can't be bothered looking after a horse that they cannot ride, then things like this wouldnt happen quite as much...

..and what kind of life is this "unrideable" horse with chronic back problems going to have being returned to the owner who disposed of it in the first place when they deemed it of no use and didn't want to keep it when they couldn't ride and set about straight away finding a horse that they could ride. If the owner had considered the horse at all in this case the mare would have been pts instead of passed from pillar to post and ridden when she is unfit for that purpose. So what has the mare got left to look forward to now?? Another 10yrs in a field, buted up with a back problem that will only get worse. Poor horse.

People should not be allowed to sell on ill or sick horses and realise that when they take a horse they have it until it is sold (healthy) or is pts/dies and they have to be responsible for all the decisions needed involving it's welfare.

This just highlights that putting animals to sleep is worse for the owner than the animal and in this case would have saved this horse a lot of pain and stress at the very least

Shiraz - this is not always the case - we have at least 5 horses on our yard that are injured enough not to go out 3* eventing or Grand Prix SJ anymore, but still perfectly sound and happy to be hacking out 3 times a week.

They would not be able to stand the demands of their owners chosen sport anymore, but these responsible owners have found the time to find the perfect loaners who really just want a horse to care for and mess about with.

What on earth is wrong with this?

All that Dixie Girl is trying to say is BE CAREFUL and have a proper LOAN AGREEMENT in place.

Strange post Shiraz - do you know Dixie Girl and her horse?

well if that were so then all my ponies would be dead by now.

ones 25 years old and one year he was unrideable due to being extremely difficult, the next year he went out on loan to win at county shows.

one came to us with a cronic back problem and completely unrideable, now after seeing the back lady lots of times he is comfortable enough to be a hack, he is never going to be able to do shows as he used to but is perfectly happy pootling round the local bridleways.

Yes they know me off of an exracers forum but really disagreed with me that i re-homed dixie, They made nasty comments like those when i was very down, upset and depressed i admitedly snapped (slightly over reactted possibly) As i could not afford to keep her if i got another horse that i could ride, I wanted some advice when i decided with my vet to give up treatment with dixie, Dixie was getting very stressed and depressed with it all and being kept in a tiny padock for 8 months (not surprisingly). But she is happy in the field for how long we dont know, I had to try for her I had done everything i could for her and it has started to effect how i felt about her and how i dealt with her i got very depressed she was my first ever horse i had only had her 6 months b4 the accident happened and everything else followed i dont think people understand how emotionally draining it is looking after a highly strung injury prone poorly horse. So i thought best for her to go play in the fields and me to have a break i lost all my confidence in horses and just cryed all the time but i felt that it was not worth keeping her, and give up my dream of having many happy riding memories to come it took me years to save up for a horse

she looks so chilled now tho.

She knows shes home safe with mum these decisions are soooooo hard for anyone unless you have your own land or can afford it and everyone will see diffrent things as being the right decision thats why we are who we are.

BUT ILL SAY AGAIN IF YOUR IN THIS SITUATION OR SIMILAR BE VER CARFUL MY FRIEND JUST HAD THE SAME THING DONE TO HER HORSE

I'm not disagreeing with your points Jo and yes I do know DD off another forum.

I'm sure you are all smart enough to read between the lines and realise what the situation was the what the poor horse has been put through

Sorry?? You decided with your vet to give up treatment?? You said the DD had chronic arthitis in her back - you can't just "give up" treatment with something like that and expect her to be comfortable and pain free?? Arthritis is a condition that needs to be managed and will get worse with time. She might appear fine now with the sun on her back but what about when the cold, wet & windy weather starts up? And if she was in that much pain previously that it caused her to be stressed etc (your words not mine) then how is she miraculously "fine" now??

To add to all this you "gave up treatment" of her and sold her on as a companion- you got her back as she was about to be resold as a ridden horse. She has therefore been doped or ridden while in pain but ridden all the same; not exactly fitting treatment for a poor mare with "chronic arthritis in her back" again your words.

Arthritis is a dengenerative condition and is only going to worsen - this can be delayed or slowed down with correct treatment/management. I really do not understand where you are coming from at all?

This isn't about you, as I really could care less, but the horse.

And yes I do know about arthritis (although not how to spell it when angry) as mum's new horse is diagnosed with it (in joints not back) and she can be used as a light hack but is very carefully managed. She received medication/supplements and treatment from vet and EBW to make sure that she is happy, comfortable and pain free. If any of those things were to change and her quality of life questioned then she would be pts (It is harder on the owner to have the animal pts than it is on the animal.) as I would not allow an animal who is suffering with no cure to carry on. I love horses and any decision made are always with their priorities first.

Please don't come on here to score points against another forum member, it really isn't of any interest to the rest of us.
By all means post warnings but in this case it sounds like a calculated snipe at someone... keep your disputes to pm or face to face please.
