My dog is in having her teeth out, she's only got about 10 in her head and they are taking five out ! The back molars and one incisor that has been leaning like the tower of Pisa. Its really upset me, please tell me about your toothless dogs !

Dental pain can be just as excruciating for animals as it is with humans. But they are very good at hiding it/eating anyway/being resilient. In comparison to dental pain, eating with no teeth is a breeze! They can often stay on kibble but you may wish to soak it/soften with wet food.

You are definitely doing the right thing. Anaesthetics always carry a risk but it is relatively small for most dogs and she will be looked after. :)

Thanks SOS been a bit weepy about it today. Angry too that the s*ds that had her previously didnt look after her which resulted in all her other teeth having to come out.

She'll be fine PL!
I had an elderly small dog (a breed that's usually a pain to anesthetize) land in my lap a few years ago with absolute death breath. One big surgery later and he had 6 teeth left, shortly down to 5 after he broke one of his remaining molars. He did absolutely fine, in fact, he was so much happier! He ate his kibble with no issues, started playing with his toys more and begging to play some gentle tuggy games. His breath no longer smelt like it could melt your nose hair, and he was so much more comfortable, it was a whole new lease of life for him! It's a shame he got into the state, but his previous owner was 92 and could barely look after himself, let alone his companion. I just look heart that I was able to relieve him of that pain and help him make the best of his final years :)

Pennyless it’s amazing how they cope without teeth . The gums heal very quickly and you will be surprised at what she can eat. Bonus is she will be pain free.
Our old lurcher had five out about three weeks ago. Admittedly she still has others left, but all is well.

We adopted Ellie about 6 weeks ago. Her teeth are not good. She’s had a check up with our vet, and will need a dental. She’s previously had some teeth removed, only has two top teeth in front. Is missing some at the back. She eats fine, just does tend to dribble a lot.

ETA. We had a cat who had most of his teeth removed in older age. He didn’t like wet food, and once his mouth healed, crunched his biscuits just fine.

This is probably a daft question, but do they put a tube down dogs throat when having an op, even though its in her mouth? I ask because she has not barked since she came back and she always barks when I get up in the morning. Wondering if her throat is sore. she is very subdued still

Shes back, and Im over £700 poorer (Gulp) she's worth every single penny. 5 teeth out. she has only 6 left I hope she can hang on to those. Bit sorry for herself but I expect she will bounce back in the morning.

Someone is taking the absolute proverbial!! How can they possibly justify that bill?

Did they tell you in advance what the cost would be?

I knew it would be £300 plus for a scale and polish even though she only had a few teeth, the tooth extraction I didnt know but didnt ask because she had to have it done. Since the practice has gone to one of the conglomerate companies their prices have gone up. sadly most of the other vets are also owned by companies. If I had bloods taken and some other thing to flush the anaesthetic through it would have been another £200, I didnt take them up on that

ETA Im in the SE, other parts of the country seem to be cheaper for most things !

Yes they still put it down :) it can definitely cause a sore throat and a different bark for a little while. But quite normal, if it continues for a while she may need something to help ease an inflamed throat but 99% heal in a few days.

all well at the check up for teeth, but she has taken to licking her paws quite obsessively, the tops of them. Never done this previously and Im wondering if she still feels stressed out, or if her mouth is still painful. Nothing to be seen on paws, the only thing I am wondering if its something to do with the metacam shes on for a week
