Please recommend a Chop/ Chaff Hay Replacer For a 33 year old fuss pot

I have a 33 year old pony, he has cushings, under control with prascend, he is NOT laminitic and never has been so I am not too worried about what he gets at his age he is allowed to be a little choosy in what he likes to eat;)

He will only pick at hay/ haylage overnight and I would like to leave him with a big tub of chop to see if he will eat a little more, he is a bit under weight, very well and full of energy, or as much as you would expect at his age.

Current diet, all the "wrong" things but he will not eat what he should, Baileys no 4 conditioning cubes, calm and condition, linseed, 3 meals a day, out all day on a reasonable amount of grass. Fast Fibre is not eaten, he does not eat sloppy feeds in any quantity, so speedibeet is no use , nuts are his preferred feed, his teeth are good.

So recommendations for either a chop or a high fibre cube he can have in largish quantities, thank you for any suggestions.
 
My oldie has spillers high fibre cubes. She has poor teeth so I use them as a partial hay replacer. They are low in starch. The difficulty though is that you cannot really trickle feed it so if yours can cope with chaff it may be better to feed that.
 
What about alfa a oil most horses eat it and it has added oil, or hifi no mollasses mine will eat that on its own it has fenugreek and small pellets added which they seem to really like and can be fed as a hay replacer.

I forgot to say he does not like oily feeds either, the molasses free might be worth trying as it is more interesting than plain chaff, thanks:)
 
My fussy older cushings pony (eugh are you trying to poison me with that fast fibre slop :D) loves the chesnut feeds range. he has alpha easy which is ok for laminitics but I think they do even more chaffy type ones if wanting to feed buckets of it
 
With our old boy we used to give him a big bucket of Fast Fibre with D&H Conditioning Mix and carrots/apples/swede etc mixed in.

Just wondering if the added goodies might tempt your boy into eating FF?

They are buggers the oldies aren't they! :rolleyes:

He really is not going to eat enough ff whatever I do to it, he is not that keen on mixes picking out the tasty bits and leaving the rest.

I am going to my feed place later so will look at readigrass and see what else they have, a few calls for samples may be an idea, although he will probably eat the sample then turn his nose up the next time:confused:
 
I would def try a bag of Dengie Healthy Hooves (not the spillers Happy Hoof).

My oldie loves it and he used to keep colicing because he would stop eating and be faddy with everything, but this, and Spillers horse and pony nuts, he will eat forever (5 years so far!)

The Healthy Hooves is also lo cal enough that he could have a good bucket full.

def would give it a try, I only had it for my fatty barefoot girlie but he kept kicking the door wanting his share!
 
Lots to choose from:) I am going to pick up 2 different ones today and let him have both, in separate tubs so he can choose which he prefers, if neither meet with his approval I will try others until we find the right one, although he is likely to change his mind after a week or two, just as well the others are not so picky and should be happy to eat the leftovers:rolleyes:

I will update when he has made a decision ;)
 
Hi,

we used to give Harry Dengie Molasses free, which is a partial hay replacer, it smells and looks so good that even I would try it ;)

Happy to pop some over if you havent managed to get a sample yet x
 
I picked up some Dengie healthy hooves and some Redigrass, he has eaten a little of the Dengie as soon as he came in, took a brief look at the Redigrass and was not impressed:( I have left him with both and will see if he eats either overnight but its looking as if the Redigrass will be enjoyed by the others:rolleyes:

I will try another selection soon, he will be doing a review of all once he finds one he actually likes:D

My oldie (the Healthy Hooves fanatic) wont touch Readigrass either, had to give mine away...:-))
