I've got a 14.2 cob who was very over weight at 500kg and has now got down to 470 and is looking loads better. The problem is on very limited grazing and more exercise he now lacks energy and isn't the forward going pony he was. Any recommendations for feed/ supplements to give energy but not too many calories? He is ridden 5 days with a mixture of schooling/ lunging/ hacking for up to 2 hours. He is 15 if that helps!

I like Allen and Page the feeds are fibre based so ideal for good doers.
The power and performance could suit,I would call them they are very helpful.

My cob who is also a good do-er did well last year on baileys lo-cal balancer. We were hacking 6 days a week for 2-4 hours, as well as show jumping a few times a month, regular xc schooling and endurance rides up to 32km. He was on limited grazing with plenty of hay.

You'll probably find that as he gets fitter he will find the work easier and become more forward going as a result. I tried the spillers quick release cubes (not sure what their actual name is) and he just became more sluggish. He also gets bored if I ride in the school too much so I try and school while I'm out on hacks. Hope that helps.

Haha- I recognise this pony!
I would go for either blood salts with handful of hifilite ( cheap option - £8 per month) Baileys lo cal (£24 for 6 weeks) or Nupafeed staying power with handful of chaff (£39 per month so very expensive).
I'm sure our fun ride tonight will get him going more forward!

I have had my 17yr old cob on allen and page veteran vitality since april and he has never had so much energy and a bag lasts forever. Dont need so much as u soak it and it expands loads.

I feed my tubby showjumper, a cup of tiger oats (made by equilibrium, and about £11 a bag lasts me 4 months) They are much better than normal oats as they have slower relsease energy so lots of energy without the crazy pony, with her happy hoof chaff. I also feed her pink powder and since using that her energy levels have also gone up :)

I cant believe people recommend oil based feeds for a good doer!!!! Oil is incredibly calorie rich, so should NOT be fed to those prone to weight gain!!!!

OP, feed a balancer to make sure he gets all the vits and mins he needs, as a balanced diet will naturally make him have more energy. Feed a small amount of naked oats a day, and you can up these when required. Hickstead Leisue balancer is £17.99 a bag for a months supply for a 500kg horse, and is low calorie etc. There is also Baileys Lo Cal at £26 a bag for about 5 weeks, or Topspec Lite, at about £29. :)
