Having just been soaked to the skin for the umpteenth time through my supposedly waterproof Bridleway stockman coat, I have had enough. I need a new long coat. Something that is at least thigh length, and not too thick. Can you recommend me some to try please. Only those that have kept you dry in persistent rain. Preferably breathable and less than £100. Or maybe I'm being unrealistic?

Thanks. :)

I tend to get outdoor walking type coats rather than horse ones. Berghaus, Sprayway and Lowe alpine all do outer shells which are really good and waterproof. They usually unzip from the bottom too which is good for riding and roll up into their pocket if you get hot riding

Berghaus every time. If you have a go outdoors near you, they have a great selection.

Thank you. Going to have a look. :)

I have a Ben Nevis wax cotton long riding coat I've had for about 4 years and worn hundreds of times in all weathers. It's tremendous - I think I had damp shoulders once after being caught out in the most horrendous storm and standing back into it for about half an hour, like someone had a hose on me. Apart from that, brilliant, and it was cheap too - had it from a stand at Your Horse Live, I think - under £60 I seem to remember.

Agree with the above re: outdoors shops. I have a fabulous coat by Didriksons, it's always kept me nice and dry in persistent rain, not too sure if they are available in the UK though. A little pricey but worth it, although probably within your budget!

This. I adore my Berghaus coat. So much so it doesn't go near a horse! I wear a Sprayway when riding, which is still good despite being kind of old. (8 years or so.) But it has been looked after and reproofed several times. I have Berghaus waterproof trousers too which are amazing. Both Berghaus items are gortex shell types though.

I was out walking in them once, it poured pretty much all day and the only bit of me that was wet was the collar of my tshirt as the rain was coming almost sideways, hitting my face and running down my neck! Rest of me was lovely and dry.

ETA: I wear the waterproof trousers to ride in if it's raining so it doesn't matter than I have a shorter coat. I have mens trousers so they're shaped differently but actually fit me better than the awful womens shape which assumes women want close at the ankle with massive thighs and arse and tight at the waist!

I've tried and rejected so many so called waterproof riding coats! I now buy Musto sailing coats for us all and find them to be the best. They are expensive but better than spending on lots of coats that end up in the bin!

Although pricey and I got mine in sale in Bury St Edmunds (an outdoor type shop cant remember the name) it was about £60 in the sale its 100% waterproof, is gortex I just went out with some cheap nylon waterproof leggings(£9) they are not that robust and the Berghaus jacket. Brilliant. I needed a jacket that was rip proof as when I would ride and fiddle there are loads of branches, hawthorn etc to get caught on and it wont tear.

There are other cheaper ones too..I think i had a horseware?? that was just as good. I always get them after xmas in the sales.

ps just came back in and am bone dry its chucking it down here.

Musto Suffolk. Try to find one in last years colour to pick up a bargain, but they are fab.

I have to admit, I have had my eye on these for some time. They are very pricy though. I am keeping my eye open for one at a bargain price. Preferably half price! Maybe if I look in the Spring/Summer.

If you want to stay dry avoid any gear produced for the equestrian market. It is pretty much all dated over priced junk. Look at hiking, climbing, mountain biking, or ski wear.

To be genuinely waterproof and breathable look for something made from goretex or paramo. I have never had a goretex or paramo garment leak, but I've been very wet in horsey gear!

They have good deals on the cotswold outdoor website.

Thanks, I'll take a look. There are so many short jackets that don't cover your bum though. When you are bent over sweeping or filling hay nets in the pouring rain, bum coverage is a must!

They are worth it. I have two (didn't pay full price though) of the older no fill ones (the 2012 one has padding) and my green one is nearly 10 years old, has been bunged in the washing machine a lot and is still waterproof. :)

I have ( now very old ) a Spraywave jacket (horrendously expensive!) - it's longish - but for riding you'd need waterproof trousers too - Regatta do some very good cheapish ones.

The best long coat is still a Barbour - Backhouse - keep it well oiled and the smell alone will keep you dry and assure you of a clear path to the supermarket check out!

For bum coverage either get some trousers or look for jackets aimed at cyclists as they have a dropped back or those aimed at ramblers.

The paramo cascada is totally 100% waterproof and covers your bum. My oh has one and wears it constantly.

Not very fashionable and I don't know if they still make them but Ornella Prosperi are the best waterproofs I've ever owned! The trousers I had cost £80 but lasted me three years, wearing them pretty much everyday.
