Any ideas on a rug that ...
  • Does not pull back on chest
  • Does not rub (withers / chest)

Is this too much to ask?

Anyone find particular brands good.
I'm thinking high ish withers, neck slopes into shoulder quite deep

I love all the Horseware Ireland rugs, including the Amigo rugs. Not only because they're excellent quality, it's also because they fit my very high withered Thoroughbred perfectly. Even so, just to be sure there's minimal friction/rubbing in the shoulder area, I also use Bossy bibs underneath his turn-out rugs.

I don't think there are two makes of rugs that are designed exactly the same, so unfortunately it does come down to trial and error.

My mare has shark fin withers which is great because rugs don't move an inch ;) But I also need a rug for a big chested, big barreled horse too.

I bought her an Amigo rug this year and I have to say I have been really pleased with it - the velcro has stayed done up, it doesn't move, it is light yet heavy weight etc etc.

The only thing being that where the neck ends and the hood starts - it has rubbed her mane out. This doesn't worry me at all as she will never be competing but if you had a show horse this would be something to consider.

JHL and Mark Todd rugs are virtually the same. Made by the same people I believe.

I like Amigo rugs also. What sort of horse do you have? Weatherbeeta and Mark Todd fit my boy well (in sig).

He's partbred arab but is very arab at the back end and big at the shoulder. he's not showy and is good at rubbing his mane out anyway so i'm not bothered about that too much. the biggest issue is the rug pulling back on teh chest.
Coolers are particularly bad - I can't find any that will stay forward of his withers : in the morning they will always be tight and high across his chest and behind his withers.
Outdoors aren't so bad with going behind his withers obviously as they don't have the stretch, but they do tighten across the chest.
This happens with or without the bossy bibs although they do minimise the bald patches where his hair rubs off on his chest.

Thanks for your help everyone

I've used this rug this winter and found it excellent... Never moves an inch on my boy!!

probabaly a bit heavy on the way into summer but something to bear in mind!

The high fleecey neck really keeps it snug as well - LOVE this rug!! :)

Also find the horseware rugs brilliant... my rambo turnout never moves either and has been worn all winter without any rubbing, even on the mane at the join between then neck and rug!

Amigo rugs are fantastic :D Cant fault them at all!! No rubs/tears and they are still waterproof.

I second this. They are also very good value for money and light and easy to put on. All my future rugs will be amigo now after years of buying much more expensive rugs.

Any horseware - though the Rambo and Rhino fitted better than the Amigo on my high withered, big shouldered TB. This is due to the Amigo not having the better front strap design so I did find it got pulled back a bit and the lining wore through at the points of shoulder in the end. Still useful as a spare though.

Amigo rugs are the best! After having by boy for nearly 11 years, he's a pure arab, they are the only rug (and I have tried lots!) that I've tried that don't rub, stay in place and don't leak!!! And they're reasonably priced too, which makes it even better!

I had a horse with severe wounds on its withers from a rug, we put it in a high neck weatherbeeta orican turnout (highneck has no pressure on withers whatsoever) and it cleared up straight away. high necks are excellent weather protection without the overkill of a full neck rug. v underrate and hard to get hold of, however often old stock therefore cheap.

As for brand- weatherbeeta- you get what nyou pay for v tough and stable and wash year after year better than others. I find a weatherbeeta with a lower fill is warmer than a thicker rug by another brand.

Hope this helps!
