I took Islay to the vet tonight & they have confirmed my thoughts that she is uncomfortable around her 4 remaining canine teeth and they need either extracting or scaling at the least. What I didn't expect is that she is going back in tomorrow to have them done

Christmas is now cancelled in my house, I have asked for bloods to be done because of Islay's age, I have asked for her to be on a drip all the way through, and the vet has said she might take a precautionary x-ray before trying any extractions to see how the roots look. The idea is that she will try & avoid extractions unless absolutely necessary.

So I am now in total panic meltdown about my beautiful girl going under a general anaesthetic again - particularly because she has lost about 3kg from her weight a couple of years ago when she was last done, so is potentially even more susceptible. Please can you send her your best 'positive, everything will be fine' vibes :( :( :(

Sending loads of positive vibes, and a brisk "of course she will be fine", which you can remind me of when I am panicking about Freya being spayed next month. Its good she is going in tomorrow, gives you less tyime to stress, although I fully understand. Will be thinking of you , keep us updated.

Thank you MM :) :) I did say 'eek' when they suggested tomorrow, but just like you say I thought it will give me less time to stress :D The lovely vet said she would phone me once Islay is under the anaesthetic and she can have a proper look at what is going on (she thinks there is pus around the bottom teeth, poor poor Islay) so I don't think I will be concentrating much on my IT training tomorrow :p

She will be fine, and will be back to even better than she was before. tooth pain is horrible, so imagine how much better she will feel :)
The sooner she is in the sooner she will be home again and causing mayhem........ do not cancel Christmas, she will be wanting a full Christmas dinner :)

Thank you Bosworth :) Islay is the spoilt one so she is always the one who comes with me on Christmas day to visit my family - last year she stole the turkey carcass off the worksurface in the kitchen, so she makes sure she has a full Christmas dinner :D :D

She is lying on the sofa looking at me reproachfully tonight....or maybe that is my guilty conscience... :p

Im sat here with tooth ache so I do feel for her and you, it looks like Christmas may be cancelled for me too.

I am sure she will be fine and your vet sounds very thorough and is going to keep you up to date, big vibes from me to you both.

Thank you Dobiegirl :) It is so nice to have a vet I can really trust, the poor girl knows what a total neurotic owner I am and is incredibly patient with me when I ask for every treatment and intervention under the sun!

I do hope your toothache gets better soon, it is a miserable thing to have, so sending positive vibes your way too :)

Thank you Picklenash, Ive broken a piece of tooth off and the other teeth have all started in sympathy, I will be ringing my dentist tomorrow and Im sure she will fit me in, perhaps Islay and me will be done at the same time. I certainly will be thinking of her and wishing her well.

Positive vibes coming your way. You're probably feeling guilty because you haven't been able to feed her, but you can make up for it tomorrow evening with something soft and tasty! Please let us know how she gets on tomorrow.

She lost about 3kg from her weight after the last time she was under general anaesthetic! :eek3: No wonder that you're worried. Fingers crossed for that Islay's blood test is okay, and that all goes well for both Islay and Dobiegirl, today at their different visits to the dentists.

Hope its all gone well, Im still thinking of you both, sadly I have to wait until Friday but as I can control it with pain killers it will be fine, I will have a brave girl sticker though CC lol.

Still no news as yet - the vet has promised to ring me. Sorry no FL I wasn't clear, she has lost 3kg since the last anaesthetic not because of it - I knew they were all looking a bit light in weight but hadnt acknowledged how much, so I feel an awful owner now :( :( :( Two meals a day are coming right up, I have been feeding them extra but obviously it isn't enough :( :( :(

Sorry you have to wait until Friday Dobiegirl, I hope the painkillers are effective!

Oh, okay. Anyway, hopefully at least her blood test must have been good, since they've not called you and said that they couldn't do anything, because this or that value wasn't good. :)

I've just got her home and she is lying tucked up on the sofa in a duvet :) She had another shot of opiate based painkiller before she was released, so I am expecting her to be a bit zonked out this evening to say the least!

All four canines came out, the bottom two came out quite easily as there was a lot of gum recession once all the tartar and muck had been removed, one of the top ones was causing an ulcer/abscess on her gum/lip so that came out & they took the fourth one out because they didnt want to leave her with just one tooth :D

The vet did raise my stress levels even more when she phoned at 3.30 ish by saying that they had been worried about Islay's heart when she was under the anaesthetic, she took a couple of chest x-rays and the heart is definitely enlarged. So I have to monitor her resting heart rate once she has recovered, and she may need an ECG and heart medication depending on the results. To be honest I am not that concerned about that (after a lifetime of living with CKCS which develop mitral valve failure very early on!) although apparently greyhounds have heart rate irregularities rather than valve failure/leakage.

I am just so relieved and glad she is home, I have a large glass of wine & am going to keep her company on the sofa all evening :D Thank you for all your lovely messages and positive vibes, they worked :) :) :)

Oh I am definitely doing that Dobiegirl :D I forgot to say, I was so pleased, her bloods came back 100% normal, so all I have to do is undertake 'Operation Fatten Up Greyhounds' once her mouth has healed & all will be fine :D :D
