Absolutely intended as light hearted fun, but my friend who runs the rescue where I got Marty and Ace has just sent me pics of a new girl..... she is the female version of Marty, absolutely gorgeous and only 2 years old so the perfect age fit :) Should I get all the hassle of having new rescues over with in one go and adopt her too? :D She is called Summer.......

Having Ace has made me realise how far Marty has come in the 6 months since I adopted him, Marty is most definitely one of the gang now and is totally settled in. He looks fabulous and I love him to bits! I know Ace will be like that in a few months time, at the moment it is very early days so every bit of progess is celebrated!

I have decided that actually I like having 4 dogs and I don't really want to reduce my numbers as yet, Amy is my only oldie left at 12 (very sadly) although hopefully I will have her for at least a couple more years :) She is a lurcher not a greyhound and (fingers very very tightly crossed) she has been as tough as old boots all her life :)

Unfortunately a rubbish background but Marty was looking so fab on the walk today :) (a lot more shiny than he seems in this pic)

They weren't greyhounds, or whippets, but we did get up to 7 with various rescues added in to the original mix of Labs and JRTs, so by my reckoning, you're not full yet;)
 
I have been assured she needs physio for the injury that ended her racing career first, and she also needs to be spayed. Having said that, saw Ace on Sunday and he was castrated on Tuesday so I could collect him Friday :p

I would love another but I am mindful that it might upset Amy as the oldie, and my food bill would be even more astronomical :D So much as this is fun, I am trying to be sensible too :) :)
 
Much against my inclination, I am going to say it is probably best if you wait a bit and see how things work out with your present pack. Committing most of our free time and resources to our dogs is ok most of the time, until something throws a spanner in the works, like falling ill, having a quick succession of really expensive vet/car/ house bills. I obviously do not know your circumstances but it is better to not be stretched to the limit ether physically or financially but... I cannot think of a good reason otherwise not to have as many greyhounds as you can make happy. :D
 
Phew, Levrier, only just seen this thread and you know me....always the cautious one!
Personally I would get Ace really settled in , which as you have stated took Marty nigh on six months.
Pay off the vet bills, save some money and as well as your pack walks, give Millie the mad one, some individual attention, exercise and recall training on a one to one basis.
 
I'd wait until your new boy is completely settled in then add to the pack again personally.....there will always be another Grey out there desperate for the home you can offer. But I do only have one dog for a reason(easy life lol)
 
I think my initial enthusiasm for getting another one now was actually promoted by getting Ace 🙄 I have questioned my sanity a few times since bringing him home, not because he is any trouble at all but because I am going through all the ‘new rescue in the gang’ process again so soon after getting Marty! Having said that, the benefit is that I can see Marty as a lovely example of how Ace will be in a few months time 😊
 
i am amazed that you are being sensible, i did try to be the sensible one with my first post but was overruled , i really expected you to weaken and get her and although i love the look of her i think you are right to wait until ace has settled completely especially as you have an old girl to think of......tell your friend to stop tempting youm i know if i had a friend who was sending me lurcher pics i would weaken but it would not be sensible for me at the moment....
 
I waited a year before getting another. I'm broody for a 3rd as been just over a year since we went up to two! but due to massive move to another country for husbands job, and having two kids to think about, I am being sensible!

also, sometimes it is a bit of a rush getting a new one and working on their quirks, but then you lose time to spend with your old ones and just enjoying well settled dogs!
 
Serious question - how do you have time for 4+? I have my hands absolutely full with one dog and one horse + full time work. How do you manage the needs of 4?!
