daughter is wanting to do more jumping on grass and as horse found going recently a bit slippy have been advised to use studs.
having looked i am more confused about what we need.
will not be ridden on very hard or very wet ground but at the moment its slippy on top quite hard underneath. plans to do show jumping, local hunter trials one day events etc
are the small pointy standard studs best to start with.any recomendations thanks

If the ground is hard, use sharp pointed studs. If the ground is soft you use the fatter ones. They vary enormously and there are lots of different ones to use. Just remember that when jumping on grass, even when it is rock hard, they can still slip when they are turning. The fatter longer ones = soft ground, small sharp ones= harder ground. The other sizes are for all the other types of ground inbtween.;) Just make sure you keep the stud holes clean and plugged. Makes the job so much easier. :)

I have a few different ones and the ones I use more often than anything are small conical ones from supastuds. I use them in all but very hard (where I'd use the sharp stud) or very soft (Bullet or dome stud for real bogs!!) ground.

I normally just use them behind but opinions on this vary wildly. The supastuds website has loads of info.

I bought 5 each of the studs I wanted (back shoes plus one spare), a normal spanner in B&Q (much cheaper), wire brush type hole cleaner and a tap. I plug the holes with either cotton wool or a ripped up flannel dipped in veg oil or (more often!) don't bother and just dig them out with a nail!! I think the boxes are good value but I wanted the supastuds as they are easier to put in.
