So a few days ago I posted about a young horse I saw for sale and asked for opinions on him. Decided to go try him, so loaded my instructor into the car at the weekend and off we went. Really liked the young chap. Lacking any real muscle, was not in great condition but he was super sweet and looked like he would grow into a lovely horse with a little tlc and some work over the winter.

I made an offer we haggled a bit and made a deal. Great. Booked the vetting and told the owner and she got shirty with me because I wanted a 5 stage vetting when in her opinion a 2 stage was more than enough because she had vetted him when she bought him 5 months earlier. Then after much telling me that I was silly and that was not the deal she increased the price of the horse but would sell at original agreed price if I only did 2 stage.

I have walked away as it screams of something being wrong. Am I being paranoid? I really can't understand the problem, I would of been paying for the vetting :confused:

I really liked him.... :(
 
I'd run away faster than a rat up a drain pipe!
Def agree u were right 2 walk away at the mo I can't think of any legitimate reason 4 what the owners said
 
This is screaming of the seller has something to hide, vetting cost wouldn't be coming out of her pocket. She is trying to encourage to you to go for lower price possibly knowing horse wont pass stage 5. I would just walk away..
 
that screams 'something wrong' to not accept a 5 stage vetting....wow.....if you are trying to sell a horse surely you wouldn't mind what they do!

did you see the original vetting?

it just sounds a very weird thing to say/do on the owners part

very sorry that you liked him so much! but remember if it doesnt work it its not the right one!!!!
 
Sounds odd!

Maybe she didn't like you :eek: and was trying to put you off without saying exactly that.
Some people just don't like saying it how it is :confused:
 
Thanks. I know deep down I did the right thing just feeling a bit deflated. Got the a scanned copy of original " expensive 5 stage vetting cert" which I could hardly make out and looked more like a 2 pager cert they get for the sales, definitely not a comprehensive 5 stage that you get here. But even if it was I would still want my own one done. Can't see any other reason than she thought he would fail :( what a waste of time.
 
Hmm, could well be she didn't like me! Never thought of that! Although she did contact me a few times again after i said i would leave it dropping the price a bit for 5 stage vetted and offering original for 2 stage. He has been for sale for a few months, I guess that says a lot too :(
 
I'd insist you stuck to the deal, or walk. None of her business what vetting you have done, as you're paying!

Either she has something to hide or she's just a control freak. She doesn't think a 5 stage is needed, so she doesn't want you to have one done. Sounds like a very odd woman.

I'm very sorry you've had such a disappointment. :(
 
What a damn cheek she has. No no and you said no.Right decision. Its your money and not up to her to decide what vetting you have. She must have something to hide as 5 months a lot could have happened and a vet report you cant read etc.

Start looking again. Dont get into the emotional blackmail. Nothing suprises me.

Tell her why, I would. Cheeky mare. You never know she may come back but dont let her play the mind games. Have a look at something else in the meantime. Take your time.
 
You are doing the right thing, this horse was showing issues with canter on the video that I was not quite happy with, it may be that he is ok but the sellers attitude is odd if the horse really is sound a 5 stage should be no problem.
 
It's not you that's mad. Unless of course she knows something that you don't.

IMO you did exactly the right thing. She must have some ulterior reason for not wanting a 5-stage vetting, even though the cost would have been met by you.
 
Very odd, that's what I thought too, really couldn't see the problem so have walked away.

Thanks everyone for the comments glad I wasn't being 'silly' and am not mad. Back to advert trawling :)
 
Thanks BP. He was pretty dead to the leg and wooden, but I thought it was something I could work on, but maybe it was a pain issue :confused:

What an idiot ..... Anyone with half a brain wouldnt go about it like she is (owner) ... What did she think you would do?

Seriously, walk away and stick to your guns on this one. If she accepts the 5 stage vetting then she has nothing to lose (its your money after all!) as she can always try it on with the next person that comes along if they use a different vet and go for a 2 stage!

First horse I looked at, was defo going to buy, but the seller refused a 5 stage. Bizarre, especially on a four year old he claimed was sound. I walked. Glad you did the same, OP. No, you're not mad!
 
Can't quote on my phone, but this is what stood out to me:

- she had a vetting done 5 months ago
- he's been for sale for "a few months"
- she doesn't want you to do a 5 stage, to the point where she is prepared to sell him off cheaply to avoid it.
 
Whoops, didn't mean to hit send - was trying to change cheaply to cheaper in my last sentence as obviously I don't know how much the agreed price was.

Anyway, I was going to finish by saying that it sounds as if she learned something at her vetting which now means she wants rid - is she a dealer? If not I'd be even more suspicious about reason for sale almost immediately after buying.

Definitely think you did the right thing - if there was nothing wrong she had nothing to lose, or if it was minor she had chance to tell you (my older pony wouldn't pass flexion tests - but if I were selling, I'd make potential buyers aware but say they could get him vetted anyway to check for any other problems if they wanted).
 
I would just like to say, I am the owner of said horse and have NEVER refused a vetting. The only thing I mentioned was that my insurance does not insist on a vetting for a horse under 5k, however I am aware that other companies do. I did have the horse 5 stage vetted and have original and email copies of this. I am so upset, disappointed and completely shaken by this thread and the attack on me and my very promising young horse. I have been in tears all morning wondering why this has been done to me - I was not happy or comfortable at the constant haggling and price offerred for my horse as well as change to agreed deal hence why I respectfully withdrew from the sale as had other parties interested and as I had not yet received a deposit to take the horse off the market. This lovely young horse is open to any vetting, trainer etc and has 2 viewings lined up for this week. Surely it is fair enough to decline an offer and not suffer a backlash for it?:eek: I do not want to get into any kind of unproffessional rant or arguement about this subject, I am just completely saddened by this and taken aback. Lastly, I would like to point out that anyone trying any horse for sale is encouraged to ride it in as much situations as possible flatwork, jumping, hacking, cantering about the fields, viewing at shows etc and I am open and honest about the level the horse is currently working at/capable of. As for condition, most of my horses live out and so expectedly are a bit more fluffy and roughed off at this time of year and only get chaser clips - this in no way affects their ability or performance and I feel is better for the development of a young horse - if its good enough for Mary King.....
