....to have left the horse out till after tea with the intention of trying a miner's head lamp to lead them in with?

It's pitch black across our fields because they're quite a way from the yard so no light is cast over to them. Sick of having to get them in before dusk as I'd rather they had more time outside.

Am I going to regret it?

I've turned out 4 before now using only the light from a distant car's headlights (the power at the yard failed).

Wasn't my favourable task but it had to be done; miner's headlamps can give off quite a bit of light though

No you'll be fine, I always get D in in the dark and don't have any problems. Last yard her field was a good 10 min walk away through numerous gates and always managed fine. Don't forget that she can see where she is going in the dark so if in doubt let her lead. I'd suggest trying it without the lamp as well because it will ruin your night vision, both of you will be able to see better without it

No, my horse goes out at 8am with her field mate and comes in whenever me or the other livery get there....which is usually about 6.30/7pm. It's dark (obviously!) by then and they're always as good as gold. As long as they're out together they don't care about being out late, and they stand nicely at the gate to have head collars put on.

You will be fine, although they might not be too impressed the first night to be left out late!

LOL

I don't need a torch to find the horses, they come to a whistle. I need the torch to see where I put my feet as the farm track is a little rutted in places from tractors driving over it daily.

It worked anyway. Oliver wasn't bothered by my cyclops, but he had a pink fit at the Christmas Lights flashing away on the house!

Nah... they'll be fine - they can see quite well in the dark you know.. it's us who're completely useless!

PS - First time I loaded H in the dark I completely cacked myself! LOL!!!

Well, earlier Titan & Jake were waiting at the gate to come in for 20 mins while me & Jake's owner to do our stables. The moment we went to catch them they thought it would be hilarious to go off down the hill and in to the bottom field, which meant instead of opening the gate and letting them walk to the stables we had to follow them in the pitch black while they cantered off with us running behind! I managed to get ahead of T and get my coat around his neck and Jake followed behind, so I think you'll be fine.

Honestly, I wasn't worried about the horses at all. Didn't give them being out in the dark a second thought. Afterall, they live out in summer.

It was more a question of me being able to see where I was going. That's the reason I've always gotten them in before dusk before. Our farm track is uneven in places and I've been known to trip in daylight, never mind the dark. The head lamp was for my benefit, not theirs.

glad to hear that you survived!

It's a nightmare wondering what to do for the best isn't it - leave them out longer - or risk a broken limb! PMSL!!!
