No idea what my horse is eating here, he seems desperate to eat them when we are out hacking and today he did a sneaky dive into the hedge row and uprooted this gigantic bunch! Any ideas?

Looks like cow parsley to me... Which is good for them! :D I don't think they will touch anything that's bad for them, they are very clever animals you know!

Phew!! Thanks, there were 3 of us out and one was worried that it might be poisonous. I said I work on the assumption that he's not daft enough to eat anything harmful but you know what they say about assumptions to thought I'd best check!! :D

Thanks x

Yeah I don't mind him having a much when we're out. Upsets the more enthusiatic hacking horses though lol - they want to get going whilst he's busy parking himself at a hedge!! :o:o

Horses are not that clever I once saw a horse out Hunting with the Pytchley grab a mouth full of Yew down the back drive at Holdenby and was dead fairly soon afterwards!!

My horse goes mad for cow parsley, she has loads in her field hedges.

The lanes are like equine drive-thru's at the moment!

Love the drive through idea :) (Alhough I do wonder what people are taught nowadays when they don't recognise a common weed...sorry OP if you don't ask you won't learn will you, well done for asking)

Hahaha I'm so glad you asked this question as I was just about to! My Toby LOVES this, and yep it is cow parsley. He is such a plod on hacks but he rushes toward these whenever he sees them! Bless! :)

Mine doesn't eat it when we are out but he will happily takes chunks of tree branches and hedges. I do worry which ones are poisonous or upsetting, will have to read up somehow.

Well my boy is most defo a fan!

Jinglejoys, don't think I can claim to have been taught 'nowadays' as I've been riding for over 25 yrs :D still didn't have a clue lol!

Still, my dad always always says better to ask a question and look foolish for a moment than to remain ignorant for the rest of your life :p
