Going to look at a possible greyhound to add to the family tomorrow. Very laid back and successfully cat tested in foster homes (sounds like he has the lowest prey drive ever, didn't even want to chase the rabbit at the track)

trying to ignore the fact we're driving over an hour and half to see him with a toddler in tow, but sure it'll be worth it if he turns out to be "The One"
 
Oh what a pity that Picklenash is rarely here on HHO anymore, she has 4 Greyhounds so would probably be sending you mega big amounts of wishing you luck, I can only do fingers crossed for that the trip ends with a good result.

Wishing you luck! We had to do 2 hours each way for our rescue and had to take our current dog 3 times first to check they got on but he is definitely worth it. As already said remember to post pics.

Well He is lovely, horizontal attitude! Was very gentle with toddler and behaved pretty much impeccably on a walk - although he had no clue that the buggy could run over his feet!

Only issue we keep coming back to is his size! As my OH said we could sling a saddle on him! 30 inches tall - possibly the biggest grey I've seen in a long time. We only have a small house (garden is reasonable size though) and I'm just trying to imagine him in here with a 2 year old and all her accroutrements.

Otherwise he probably is pretty ideal as a first time (for OH) dog, just can't get over his height! Grhhh - he's the first rescue we've looked seriously at and I can't make up my mind,,,,

Greyhounds are known for being in off mode indoors, as long as your house is big enough to fit in a dog bed suitable to his size, I doubt you'll have any problem. In general, a Greyhound needs to be able to have a good run outdoors on a regular basis, but indoors their main need includes a warm and comfortable bed, and food of course.


P.S. I said that they needed a dog bed of suitable size, well, there is of course the risk for that he may have a different opinion than you, about what is a dog bed... (photos found through Google image search)

And perhaps proving that you can fit a lot of Greyhounds comfortably into a not too big room, without that they demolish the room...

If he has the right personality and is steady, I would worry less about his size as greyhounds do spend most of the day snoozing and can curl up suprisingly small when needed, after a while you don't notice how tall they are. I've a small greyhound girl 25" and lurcher 23" both are capable of stretching out to take up same bed space as my 28" lad & yet they are the ones that tend to run into you rather than go round
 
Thanks all for your comments, and I love the greyhound room :-)

Unfortunately we decided against him as he would literally take up a quarter of the kitchen just by standing still. OH decided that he couldn't cope with a dog taller than his desk!

We are still looking seriously at pointy dogs (I grew up with one and love the type) and have two home checks this weekend. We're also talking to another rescue about a greyhound bitch that seems quite interesting. I'm sure the right one is out there somewhere!
