Took my new boy out for a walk in hand today to show him round. He's only 5 and been with me 2 weeks. Not been out before and is a project horse who has issues being ridden hence the in hand thing. So me and friend head out down bridlepath and all of a sudden from behind us appears a few children. Horse has a little spook but not too bothered. Then there are more and more and some adults. Well it turns out the local school were doing a sponsored walk!!!!!! There were about 200+ kids and adults walking down the bridle path all going same way as us. Horse was terrified! The kids were all shouting and running round us, even some on bikes whizzing past. Coming right up to horse despite being told not to by friend. By this point poor horse is frantic so i pulled him to side to see if that would help but then he started dancing round in circles with me desperatley trying to aim his arse away from the kids. Now at this point if i was an adult with them I would be dragging kids away and giving horse lots of space BUT NO, They think its a good idea to keep coming past. Well bless him in the end we just found a space and joined in with them and got off at nearest exit! So pleased with horse for being so brave and not trying to run off or kick anyone. So angry with school and parents as there were no signs up warning of this walk (as i would have avoided it like the plague) and why did no one seem to care that their kids could have quite easily been trampled or kicked!!!
Sorry for the rant, choccy biccies if you still with me.

jesus! people these days amaze me. even those non horsey people out there can surely appreciate the dangers of a horse, especially one dancing around on the end of lead rope with screaming kids surrounding him!! well dealt with and thumbs up to your boy, he must be really brave!! xxx

I know bless him, he got lots of praise all the way through and treats when got home. It was scary enough for me being surrounded by all those kids never mind poor neddie. lol. I was very pleased with him but not happy being put in that situation. I am going to write to the school and ask them to put notices up next time cause I dread to think how some horses would have reacted. If a kid had got injured you could bet that it would have been me who got in to trouble or sued though!

How incredibly thoughtless of the school

If it had been on footpaths only then fine to just turn up, but not on bridleway.

The ignorance of people is astonishing! And you can bet if anyone had been injured they would have blamed you entierly and show complete astonishment that anything happened.

Though you would have thought the thickest city dwelling human with no animal knowlege, would appreciate the danger of 4 moving iron shod legs attached to something that weighs around 500kg....

Well done on getting out alive! I would have yelled at the nearest adult/kids to halt and keep the hell away if they wanted to keep all bones intact, and may be, the next day called the school to apologise/ explain in a more rational voice.

Your poor horse! He sounds so well behaved bless him. As for the children you have to wonder why there wasn't any adults there? It's lucky one of the kids didn't end up kicked or worse. Crazy!
