Pleased to say I fed the hounds Skinners Duck and Rice tonight..

Better get rubbing some coconut oil on the remaining teefs. :p

For the sake of argument my raw fed dogs don't have periodontal disease but one of them did need a GA and extraction after fracturing a carnassial while eating a raw meal. Swings and roundabouts...!

Well that is reassuring, when one of them develops some dread internal disease or problem due to me feeding kibble I shall be sure to let you all know as well. Given the proportion of dogs nationally which are fed something other than a 'natural' raw diet, I must admit I won't be anticipating problems...

Patronising? Pot, kettle and black spring to mind - that at least is how I read your post above to me. Or maybe that was sarcasm?

Also, if you read my posts correctly you will see that I did not pass judgement on you, your finances or your choice of diet for your dogs. I merely stated MY preferences and reasons and suggested that you inform yourself by doing some research. However, you have now informed me that you obviously know everything about dogs and have no need for research so I will bow to such a superior all-knowing being and say good night and good luck.

That was sarcasm, just so you can recognise it again..... I'll maybe add a smiley or two next time to make it clearer for you 🙂

Mine did have periodontal disease whilst on raw - Hoover has had the majority of his teeth out since being with me, on a raw diet! That obviously goes back to when he was in training poor lad, makes me wonder what on earth greyhound trainers feed their dogs - the two of mine who haven't been in training have no teeth problems at all, despite being fed a mixture of raw and kibble since I've had them

Suggest you do some research.

Off the top of my head there was the 2005/6 recall of kibble in USA due to it leading to some kind of toxicosis - something to do with the quality of the grain used. This was well documented at the time so you should be able to find stuff on the internet.

There is also research from Stockholm Uni re the greater levels of periodontal disease in commercially fed dogs AND the effect that the bacteria from such disease has on the other major organs.

There are also several additives/flavourings/preservatives that have been banned in human foodstuffs due to links with kidney problems that are still used in dog foods.

Yes, the whole area needs more research, but based on what is available then I would rather pay a higher price per month for the diet I give my dogs to ensure that I am doing my best for them and not subjecting them to some silent killer.

But isn't there research where a load of dogs have died from raw feeding?

Well, due to my being pregnant, both the dogs have been switched to mostly kibble and I can't see any difference in their coats, teeth, behaviour, etc. They still get odd raw days if OH makes up the food. And no, they don't get any stomach problems either.

There is a way to ensure dogs do not ingest harmful ingredients and most conscientious dog owners do just that, we find out what ingredients make up any food we are thinking of buying. Skinners does not contain any harmful ingredients or additives but whether you think sugar beet for instance is harmful to dogs is purely a matter of opinion. My dogs seem to like chewing crumbling pieces of wood and certainly ingest some so I am not unduly worried about added roughage.

It is just as important to know where raw food comes from and how it has been handled before feeding it. I do feed some raw meat and bones and when a new pet shop opened near me selling frozen raw meat, I started buying from them. It did smell rather even after careful thawing and my dogs started having regular 24 hour tummy upsets all at the same time. I stopped buying the meat and went back to my usual supplier, no more problems. Not all raw is healthy it would seem.
