Jay had a hoof abscess weeks ago. I thought it had cleared up, turned him away and four week on I have brought him back as the abscess has flared up. Farrier came and dug it out and poulticed it.

I was so nervous about poulticing this time as last time he was a nightmare, really trying to kick us etc and doing everything he could to stop us getting near his hoof.

So today, we changed tack. Instead of getting tough with him and ending up twitching (which I hate), my daughter held him and tickled his lips and talked baby talk to him in a sing song voice. Goodness knows what she was telling him, but he stood with his hoof resting on my leg while I got the old poultice off, washed it all with epsom salt water, dried it and re poulticed it.

I am just so pleased with him, let's hope he is as good tomorrow when it has to be done again!

However, tomorrow I will wear washing up gloves, as my hands stink!

glad it went ok, he looks so innocent as well :)

Well I obviously spoke too soon. Yesterday nights poultice had come off by this morning so set to to replace it. he was pig. All the good times have gone out the window and he was back to hopping, kicking, waving the hoof in the air etc.

Eventually got the poultice on while his foot was on the floor resting on it's toe!

Grrrrr

How long did it take the abscess to clear up first time? (Sorry - just curious because my boy has one according to my YO and she's dealing with it while he's on part livery. He's stabled with a poultice)

Well I thought it had cleared up after a week of poulticing, and then kept him in for another week with no poultice, but staying on a dry shavings bed. Then I took him to the turnaway field for his winter holiday. He was there for four weeks, when I saw that it had flared up again. So brought him home, farrier dug it out last Tues and I hot poulticed for 5 days and now I am dry poulticing and farrier will take another look on Thursday.

I have heard of them going on for months! So keeping fingers crossed that this one will clear up soon.

Hope your boy's will clear up without too much bother. Lucky you not having to do the poultices!
