i ma having trouble with my 14.1hh conemara cross mare. she is usually pretty laid back but is always hungry. lately the owners have been complaining because she has become quite moody and has started to charge at her door and pace when she is fed in the morning. i have tried bordem breakers as hay doesnt last her very long but she destroys them and they make her hyper and stressed. i am worried this unsual behavour will continue and i dont want this to continue.
any help would be greatly taken
thanks

Is she getting enough fibre? Ad lib hay/forage might be a good idea to stop her being hungry? That and as much turn out as possible.
Good luck! x

Hay in a small gauge net to slow her down and plenty of turnout as previous person said. Also putting carrots inside haynet can help boredom. If she is desperately hungry is she up to date with her worming and teeth? What condition is she in? Is she looking poor and thin?

Is she underweight/overweight/just right?
Is she in pain anywhere? sudden moodiness would sometimes indicate a problem somewhere...are her teeth, back etc all up to date
Is her worming up to date?
How much hay does she get?
What is she fed in terms of hard feed?
How much is she worked?
What turnout does she get?

Sorry for all the questions, but answers to these may help!

if hay doesnt last long double or triple net it. or you can add straw to the hay so you can give same amount of hay but only roughage with the straw. or you can put the hay thro a shredder and feed it as a chaff.

just a few ideas, also make sure shes getting enough horse time ie turnout

she has full turnout but comes in at night. everything like weight worming etc is all up to date and she is healthy. we have tried the whole haynet in a haynet thing but it's either still gone to quick or she wont eat the she get even more moody.she has chaff twice a day.
she is not normally moody in any way and she is worked daily.
it sound insane lol but im worried she might hurt someone. tonight my mum was even worried about going in with food because she ran at the door.
hellpp!!!!

You could possibly try a horslyx and if she gorges on it, use the stable lick size with the holder as it has a bar you can have across it to restrict intake......

Or put feed in a feedball?

As said before could be her first season of the year? you could try looking at something like oestress??

What's she like out of the stable, is she easy to handle then or still uptight?

If the hay is gone to quickly, even a haynet within a haynet then she is not getting enough fibre - horses are designed to trickle feed 24/7 if they don't get this then they get stomach ulcers and behavior problems because of the stress and pain this causes. 2 or 3 haynets stuffed full should last one night - 1 haynet is not enough for any equine, if they are good doers then poor quality hay with straw added and then soaked will do fine. Even with turnout during the day/boredom breakers makes no difference - there is still 12 or more hours with no fibre passing through the horses stomach.

There is your answer. In order to be sure that the mare is getting enough fibre there should be a small amount left each morning. How has her behaviour been in other years? Has anything else changed?
