I am now registered poor - Palomino Section A pony + breaking to harness (EEK!), new set of leather harness (Ouch!), and a Bennington Carriage (How much? Aargh!!!)- but also happy - pony goes well, carriage is comfortable.

Now we want to go to our first show - so what do we wear? What "spares" do we need in our basket? How much....? What society do we need to join? Go on - give me some advice - one of you must have done this before

Hey, carriage driving magazing has been running a series the last few months, basically showing for numptyies like me lol so if you can get a few back copies it might be a start.

You might consider joining the BDS, even if it's just for the insurance. They can also point you in the right direction for showing classes as well as running their own events like rallys and drives. Your local LHHI (Light harness horse instructor) will usually be able to help with your turnout and anything you need.

As for spares, you can usually buy a nice ready made set! lol But you need, a trace, reins, hame strap (usful even if you don't have a full collar) and a couple other straps of different sizes. You should also have a knife. Ummmmmmm hoof pick and balier twine is usful but I guess untidy for a showing class.

Sorry show driving isn't really my thing much rather HDT and rallies with a nice chunk! lol

Hope that helps

Erm, head towards Horse Driving Trials and Zilco Harness - more fun and less work respectively.

I hope your pony's taking to it well.

Thanks. I did the insurance already with the NFU as all my horses are. I will join BDS but there isn't a local branch. I do take carriage driving but its not all that informative on dress and spares (or I missed that one - must dig out the mags pile). I'll go and try cariage driving forum. Still be obliged for any ideas.
