is there any pleasure/endurance riders out there? - have just read the post on hacking and the amount of people that replied saying they hated it really surprised me - i love it!!! so lets have the REAL hackers giving their vote for the joys of roaming/charging round the country side following arrows!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yup, I'm an endurance rider - have been doing it for 10 years as an extension of loving hacking. I've been riding for much much longer than I care to think and have always enjoyed hacking out - IMO that's what horses are for. In the past I've loved jumping and have done the odd bit of dressage but nothing is quite so enjoyable as seeing your surroundings from a different perspective, having a canter up a turf track, splashing about in a river, watching wildlife that isn't scared of you because it thinks you're just a horse ...

Thats the bit I love. I sat under a young buzzard on my horse for ages, it was about a metre above my head. He was watching me the whole time but I guess he just thought I was part of the horse, it was only when I said something it took off!

Couldn't agree with you more! I think those are all my reasons entirely! I have managed to get so close to foxes and rabbits.

When I next buy a horse it will be a happy family hack! That doesn't mean it will be a plod or it will be anything 'common' - you could spend an awful lot of money on a very well bred hack.

As I said on the other thread I enjoy hacking because I love watching wildlife and chatting to my hacking companion. We do have off-road tracks to ride on and can go up to the moors as well. Some rides take us on roads, through housing estates where we have a nosy at people's back gardens.

We have signed up for the two day ride in the Borders Festival of the Horse, so I'm looking forward to that. http://www.bordersfestivalhorse.org/rides.html

I love hacking, my horsse is totally relaxed and enjoys his blasts to clear the cobwebs. Jump the odd jump and generally have fun. What could be better ????????/

i had a lovely hack this morning with my husband and a friend - the wind was blowing and the sun was shining - we had a good old blast along a lovely tree lined track - a bunny ran in front of my husbnds horse and people waking their dogs said good morning and smiled at us - the world is a lovely place today!!!!!!

I love hacking. To me riding in an arena is just going round in circles. I love seeing the wildlife & the changing & feeling the breeze in my face.

Me and YO had a lovely hack this morning including a good blast along a bridlepath - both of us laughing and the horses loved it too

I'm off doing Ullswater EGB ride tomorrow... the first of many this year hopefully.

The thought of trotting round in circles, doing endless transitions in the same surroundings or when competing having to plait up, wear uncomfortable jackets/breeches/boots/stocks/hairnets, fills me with dread. I'd much rather have the thrill of being out in unfamiliar countryside, cantering in places you would never normally be allowed to ride but also having the time to slow down and appreciate our incredible countryside. Plus endurance is the horsy sport most closely suited to a horses natural physiology and its also the sport which is the least exclusive. You don't need a special or expensive horse, special tack or equipment or posh clothes for the rider. Anyone can do it and have the satisfaction of successful completions without any judge subjectively deciding you weren't good enough or they didn't like your particular type of horse.

oh how true - i belong to anglian distance riders - they are such a friendly bunch - like you say all sorts of horses not just arabs - and no one judges your riding eg: legs in wrong postion or hands too high etc etc!!!! Everyone is so pleased for each other when youve managed to get round the course with out falling off or getting lost! x

I loove hacking too!

Ellie and I went out for nearly two hours on our own this morning and thoroughly enjoyed one anothers company. I wittered on all the way about all sorts of rubbish and she listened intently!
