my mare tore her ddft 6 weeks ago got another scan 24 th of may I'm really stressed I'm not coping with her at all because she was a really fit horse loved life ,jumping , cc ,hacking etc she is so hard to handle walking in hand nightmare being stabled nightmare the worst times are when her mate goes out in the field or ridding she has a hissy fit box walking even trotting round her stable so I decided to make her a 12 x12 paddock Nxt to him today she just ran from one side to the other bucking and leaping so now she is really lame now I rang the vet yester said have u any thing stronger than sedaline giving 5 mls does nothing he said not really any help wuld really be grateful I'm really down tonight x

i really feel your pain, i have had the same problem with my mare who is on complete box rest! is yours supposed to be on complete box rest?? i have borrowed a little 11 hand pony to keep on the yard while the others are out in field, i am lucky enough to have a sand paddock opposite her stable that he stays in at night so she can see him, it took her a week to settle down and acp!! other suggestions might be a stable mirror to amuse her while stabled! dont beat yourself up though, you were just trying to do the best thing for her!

its really horrible isn't because i no she wont ever get better if she carries on like this she is 16 yrs old im so worried ..yes she is ment to be on box rest with controlled walking vet said turn her out in small paddock I have also got a 11 h pony to keep her company which she hates and only wants her mate not sure about mirror coz she hates another horse near her stable kicks out nightmare when I was riding her lots she was much calmer and happy don't even no if I can ever ride again they said I can only if she responses to treatment which she clearly is not the future looks bleak atm

This is a very expensive option but she may be more settled in a rehab yard. In a new environment she may take to box rest more easily as she won't be used to being turned out at the new place, most other horses will also be in all the time and there are experienced staff around to handle horses that are full of it because of box rest.

sorry ignore the last post I wrote a long new post but a bit new to this and it expired and pushed the back button and posted old post by mistake will post later

After a stint of 9 months box rest my lad is not tolerant of box rest anymore. He is a very good natured horse and has a normally laid back approach to life, however he has been on box rest for a month with lami. There is a stronger sedative than sedalin but I cannot remember what it is called but my vet offered it to me but we decided it was a little too strong to be given when starting riding again so we carried on with the sedalin. Sedalin doesn't touch him much and he was on half a tube morning and evening and it didn't stop him creating. I personally would put pressure on the vet so that they can monitor this behaviour and give you something to help her.

I really feel for you as this is something that you don't need when you are already upset and stressed about your injured mare. Big hugs x

Ask your vet about potassium bromide..... Im using it currently on my mare; apparently it works in a different way to sedalin and you can use it with sedalin or on its own.

Shown to be more effective in mares but def worth a go (cheaper than sedalin 2). I know of 5 horses that have tried potassium bromide recently and only one horse (gelding) it didnt have any affect on.

Also im finding keeping everything in the same routine helps chill her out - if i vary things ie: new walk or hay before walk then she seems to be more naughty!!!

thanks guys will ring the vet tomorrow tbh I think my mare must feel insecure she is really bad when my daughters horse does any riding etc told my daughter not to ride atm but it's not fair on them both I'm trying to get her to like the pony was hoping she wuld rely on him a little while my daughters horse is riding only time will tell, I turned her out in the 12x12 paddock today stood there with her for awhile with the others very near by and she only did a couple of bucks which was good and got up to half the amount I should be walking before she got to silly so turned round got dragged home but it's a improvement lochpearl hope ur horse gets better soon thanks for the hugs and will keep the same routine I did notice things were worse if I changed it also my mare has separation anxiety to add to it which has got a whole load worse xx
