Today i have had the master saddler out to look at my boy. She has said that his saddle fits him well but due to his loss in muscle he must be ridden in a thick saddlecloth and half pad.

She is well regarded sadddler and althougt i'm not a lover of gadgets and extras i am confident with her advice re needing one.

So pls recommend me a half saddle? Synthetic or wool? I would obviously prefer it to be cheaper but my boys comfort is on the line so if it has to be a pricey one, i will have to dig deep into my pocket!

Le Mieux are the only ones I use, they have a clear bit for the spine and they're not as bulky as other half pads I find, very nice.

2nd the above. I have a prosorb one as it has pockets to put shims in to alter fit as needed.

I also have used the Le Mieux ones and they are really good quality. However I have now swapped to an Acavallo gel one as I also need to use a riser (and you can get Acavallos in all shapes). I find my horse seems much happier with the gel variety and it is easier from a cleaning point of view for day to day use.

Ah thanks, i was looking at le mieux ones. Was wondering if theres actually any real deifference between them and cheaper ones. Anyone any recommendations?

The cheaper ones aren't as good quality or as well designed, you get what you pay for. Have a look on ebay, there's been a few on there recently.

Alternatively what about a prolite pad? I also use them.

Cannot say about the Le meiux pads, never owned one - as I am a cheap skate! :p
I had a Cottage Craft sheepskin half pad- with the rolled edges! I loved it, so did the boy, it never partiality got "squashed" down, as I have seen some do. Unfortunately boy-oh wrecked it *sigh*.
But Robinsons used to do a "softy pad?" I think? And it was nice too, it wasn't pure sheepskin of course but really soft, padded and to be honest for the £12 I paid BARGAIN!

:D

I ride with one of the KM Elite spine free half pads it looks amazing, havent had to wash it yet, it also sits very well under the saddle, as have previously used ones that havent really served their purpose, they are well worth the money as well, they come under the KM Elite distinction range

You definitely get what you pay for with sheepskin (and I def would recommend sheepskin). I have clients who have bought very cheap ones and found they are full of seams and poor quality sheepskin that ends up shedding, LeMieux ones have been know to shed and to me are not man enough for the job (lambskin in this instance is not better than sheepskin). For any rememdial saddle fittings that I do I use Mattes pads for sheepskin and Nuumed for wool fleece - the latter is a nice product but for muscle loss I'd use sheepskin, therefore Mattes. I use the four pocket correction system which means you can shim to balance the saddle, and even for asymmetry. A very useful pad to have in the tackroom.

I've had my LeMieux for two years now and it has worn and washed really well (I don't put a numnah or saddle cloth between it and the horse). It has retained its shape beautifully and is still fluffy.
