this is the first time i've had stud holes with my own horse, but have worked on yards and 'plugged' plenty of stud holes! always picked them out with a nail/tap with the threads on and then stuffed a load of cotton wool and they've always been fine- but today trying to plug my own for the first time it was an absolute nightmare! the cotton wool wouldn't stuff and after i'd ridden they had all fallen out and needed digging out again! so any tips on ways to keep them in? she had her fronts done on thursday and farrier is coming out again on friday to put the backs on so if its anything he can do i can ask him to do it then :) are those little rubber plugs any good? thanks in advance!

I use the rubber plugs between events. Night before I split a cotton wool ball in half roll it in Vaseline then plug the hole. This makes it easier the day of comp. to remove the wool and get the studs in.

I just use sponge with hoof oil on and never had any problems. But I always clean out the night before if I'm going anywhere the following day and re-plug. I will then use blank studs for travelling, so then it's just a case of one stud in and the other out when a get to my event. Much easier than faffing x

Another for cotton wool & vaseline here. The plug stays in & the thread stays good, unless you're unlucky enough to get a small stone wedged in it. :)

thank you all :) will try again tomorrow with hoof oil, how does this make them stay put? off not will give it ago with vas aline, dont think i have any atm, and failing that will find some little bungs :)
