I went to a job interview this afternoon to a nice little yard just up the road from me. They are really short-staffed and need someone to ride their horses (it's basically a dealer's yard, but a good and reputable one) so the job is basically riding all day every day (perfect thinks Sil). They work 8am-5pm (not bad), six days a week (ok negotiation needed there) and pay... wait for it... £100 a week!

I had to keep my mouth shut as otherwise I would have burst into a fit of laughter when I was told!! It's not even a live-in position (could be, but I agreed before going to interview that I will live at home)! Such a shame because the horses are lovely and the people are too, it seems like a really nice place to work and it will be fantastic when they've built all the bits they're going to... but £100?! £1.85 an hour?! Even I have my standards...

I never thought I'd be holding back the laughter at a job interview!

How RUDE ! Are they paying you to ride only, no doubt they'd want you to do other jobs as well. Would you get a commission for every horse sold?? I think its a downright cheek to expect you to work for so little... Laugh I'd have probably said something quite harsh to them!

The manager lady said "oh no, you seem really disappointed, you've gone all quiet" whilst I was there surpressing giggles! It'd be my DREAM job if they actually paid well! I'm planning on talking to the owner of the place and seeing if I can get more sense out of her

Catdragon - I'd be paid to do whatever yard work I was required to do, but mainly it'd riding as they've lost their rider and the horses are going to quickly become un-saleable if not ridden properly.
I'm currently paid £6/hour for yard work with a little bit of riding, and TBH I'm considering staying!!

If you want the job I would be looking for at least the same hourly wage, tell her you can't afford to be paid per ride.. at £100 per week that'd be 16.5 hours work at your current job. I can't believe they'd expect you to work for that... especially if you are expected to ride the tricky new arrivals... I'd most definately speak to the owner, you have nothing to lose really, good luck.

Thanks, I definitely will attempt to negotiate something better (and legal!) out of them. I do really want the job, I can see myself working there and loving it and doing really well but I do need to afford to eat occasionally

When I was looking for a summer job a couple of years ago I went to a local Welsh Cob stud who wanted me to do 8 till 5 for, wait for it...£20 A DAY!!!!

I nearly choked!

The guy said that most people who work for them, do it for the experience of working in a large and successful stud!

Needless to say I didnt take the job!!

Oh come on Sil - you can't expect them to pay you for a lunch hour so that's 8 hours a day, 6 days a week = 48 hours which works out at £2.08 an hour, not £1.85. Stop exaggerating so wildly lol!

My first horsey job was at a livery/dealing/showing yard.
I was a slave 7am (boss picked me up on his way in) and then invariably sauntered off for the day and picked me up to drop me home on his way home. Could be 5pm...could be 8....!

I would ride unridable beasts, maybe twice a day and the rest was spent poo shovelling and ragwort pulling, tack cleaning..... 6 days a week for the grand sum of 40 quid a week, but I LOVED IT!!! x

Ok I thought this thread had died, but seeing as it's back I'd better say that it was indeed crossed wires. Working pupils get £100/week plus accommodation plus exams and training. I took the job and will be getting slightly more than £100/week!!
