Pneumonia in horses

Hi :)

Has anyone here had any experiences with their horse developing pneumonia?
How well did they cope with the treatment, and did they return to normal after recovering, for example did they end up back competing etc..

oh dear, this is a very spooky thread in terms of timing, at this point I shall say that they can recover from it, but it can cause a lot of problems if it is not cleared up by the treatment!! What treatment is your horse on? is this an ongoing issue? have you had any investgations done?
 
he has gone into an equine hospital today, they are almost sure it's pneumonia but still waiting for test results to confirm. The vet did say that if he responds well to the treatment and recovers he will probably go on to compete again in the future, but she did say that if he doesn't respond well the outlook won't be good :( this isn't issue that has occurred in the past - he has just turned 6! just before i left him there tonight they had ultra-sounded him and were about to insert a camera to look at his lungs etc. they will call tomorrow evening with an update.

any info good or bad is very much appreciated!!
 
mmm, pray he responds to the treament, should be okay if he does. The horse I am thinking off originally responded well to the treatment, but owner was concerned he kept coughing vet thought owner paranoid, eventually and with scoping turns out not all the bacteria were killed so there is still an issue, many more drugs needed, some which caused side effects, currently off treament awaiting further scoping and xrays, but still hopefull of a full recovery and with horse fit for eventing, he is currently feeling rather too well!
 
yes i am praying that he responds well!! the vets have said that he will probably be at the hospital for around 3 weeks. i hope the horse you know fully recovers :)
 
My old girl got a dose of it in 1995 within a few months of me buying her. She got some sort of virus (possibly EHV, but never confirmed) and it lead to secondary pneumonia. She was very ill with a temperature of over 104. She was treated with IV penicillin and ten days of oral antibiotics. My vet told me to give her a week off for every day she was poorly. It never left her with any problems and she is 29 now. One interesting thing though was that after the penicillin, she broke out in a terrible sweat but within 15 minutes demolished a haynet having barely eaten a think for days. I was warned she would go down again and exactly 4 days later she relapsed but then spontaneously recovered the same day and went on to make a full recovery.
 
I remember a dear little pony mare getting pneumonia which then when on to develop pleurisy. Sadly they couldn't save her and she was pts. But I do know that pleurisy can be very serious, and if your horse is at hospital it shouldn't develop that anyway.
 
vet has called and he is responding well to treatment! should make a full recovery but it wont be until september time until his lungs fully recover for him to be back in full competition work! he had a lot of fluid in his lungs and has had chest drains today and yesterday so the fluid is coming out nicely :D not really a problem about how long it takes, i just want him to get better! :D thanks for asking x
