So looking at the rules the SJ is 1m and with 2 fences at 1.10m. What is the point? It seems so stupid. The SJ should be at 1.05m with 2 fences at 1.10m surely that would be a closer match and more of a challenge and teach you to ride.

So you go round the course with first 2 fences at 90cm then get to 1m fences then go oh crap kick like hell its a 1.10m fence.

They might as well have left it as it currently is as PN is exactly the same just with 1.05 not 1.10m.

Yes but unlike IN the SJ is not half way between PN and N which just strikes me as stupid. Next year there will be IntroPN I am sure.

I appreciate that but I still think people will come unstuck. Jumping 2 fences that are bigger is easy. Its jumping a whole course that is bigger that is harder.

It could give an extra class for horses that are never going to get round a Novice XC rather than an OPN. What are the restrictions on it?

I don't think people will come unstuck but I do agree it would be more sensible to have the majority of fences at 1.05 with a couple at 1.10.

Do you know what the restrictions on the class are?

Have to say that I quite like the idea as it's the thought of galloping into N xc fences that gives me the willies..... would be fine with 2 sj fences at 1.10 as they're bound to be parallels which my horse has the scope to tackle even if I'm a bit far off.

Have no aspirations to go N as I'm at the stage of my career that I'm losing my bottle...... maybe the class is aimed at people like me (happy hacker eventer). If I were a good jockey with a talented youngster then I'd miss it out and go straight up to N then I i guess.

It seems unnecessary to me, after all if peole are worried about doing novice classes there are the OPN classes they can do. As others have pointed out it would be more of a genuine stepping stone to novice with the SJ at 1m 05 and 2 or 3 fences at 1m10

Interesting, so it really opens up a door for amateurs who are perhaps buying novice schoolmasters ... as I may be (hopefully) this summer

I would do them as it would be good to start jumping some bigger fences before going to Novice. I think it would have been better to make them 1.05 but they may change it once they have run a few and had peoples comments on it.

I thought maybe the article in the H&H is wrong regarding the SJ? Can't find anything on the BE website that mentions this class at all except in the calendar as to which events are running them.

I assumed the jumps would be 1.05m with an upright and an oxer at 1.10m and the first 3 jumps at <1.05m, i.e 1m?

Seems sensible to me.

I'm hoping to have a go at it anyway unless I bottle out!

When I first heard about these classes I was quite excited as it sounded ideal for my horse, but then i read in the rule book about the fences being 1.00 and 2 at 1.10 and the first few fences have to be lower and more inviting still. V disappointed, it doesn't seem like a genuine stepping stone to me, it will merely favour those that are good at the dressage!

Well from reading the rules I think I can enter as its grade 3 and 4 horses so horses like Saf who got a single point for being 25th

can have a go at Tweseldown my boggie course at novice

so we wont have to jump the coffin

Just wish the SJ was bigger

Nope, new rulebook says there can be 2 obstacles at a max of 1m 10 and the rest of the fences must not be higher than 1m..

I think the courses are going to look very strange with 2 fences in the course 10cm bigger than the rest!!

Received the Rule Book today and see what you mean. Yes, 2 jumps at 1.10m will look stupid. Maybe the course builders will be less generous in making the jumps under 1m? All upto height and width and related distances??

I was hoping that as an extra class at Tweseldown in March it might not be as popular and give less chance of being balloted

Actually, just noticed in the rule book that the jumps are allowed to be wider. So the oxers/triple bars will be a little meatier, though if they build the 1.10m oxer at maximum width we'll all die of shock!!
