Podencos ...

Currently thinking about applying to rescue a Podenco (Canario) cross to join our active family & hopefully be a bikejor dog (if he takes to it). I've read a lot about the breed, but have no real experience of them. We are looking for an active dog, large-ish size, high energy with lots of stamina, which will get on with the rest of our pack & be happy to be kennelled during the day. It'd be nice to have recall but i'm not sure how realistic that is given their prey drive. Any thoughts/experiences please?

We have one living here on the farm, well a cross breed. He is a sweet little dog but has no recall at all. He is nice but dim. (I think his owner would say that too, so I am not speaking out of turn). He is obsessed with chasing birds.
He is fear aggressive to strange dogs, apparently, but was neutered by the rescue when very young which probably didn't help. He also gets beaten up by his fellow dog (an Irish terrier bitch) quite often so when he is out perhaps he likes to prove something?

Our rescue is a springer cross podenco. (We think). He is very clever but doesn’t apply that to training. He is however very affectionate and loving and MUCH easier than the Spaniel in terms of energy but will keep up with him on walks.

Training wise he has picked up all the necessary commands but he’s just happy to stick with me and not stray too far. He is quite nervous, which I’m not sure if it’s a Podenco thing or because he wasn’t socialised properly as a young pup.

A friend has one lovely dog, zero recall so they have to be very careful where it's let off the lead.

Thanks xx Abi90, very cute! No amymay, he's in UK rescue. We've decided against him, i think with that breeding he's just not for us.

Good call I think, OP. There must be a million lurchers out there looking for homes who would fit your bill (but don't mention the kennels most rehome places have the hab dabs about them).

Quite a few do seem to be quite nervy. There's two in my canicross group and I meet quite a few through work- they're very 'nice' about their nerviness, but I'm not sure they would easily step up from canicross to bikejor.

Valin ... do you mean Marshall? Good call if so - he's currently with a good friend of mine & looking like he's going to have a very promising career in bikejor.

LOL, we don't pick her up until tomorrow. We've decided instead hubby getting the new dog, he is going to be canicrossing/bikejoring my oldest GSP's off my rig team , & we've bought a young eurohound bitch (a type of specially bred sled dog, which have quite a bit of GSP in them, along with Alaskan husky .. which again is a type not a breed) for me to race.

I will post pics in due course, promise!

Yeah, he's such a nice boy & loving life now. I do quite a bit of work with GSP Rescue Services & have found loads of active homes for GSP's from there (including my own rescue GSP).

The eurohounds on Google all look a bit nuts, I'm sure they'll be awesome for bikejour

Yeah, they can be .. when we get a new racing dog "crazy" is in the job description! We have an Alaskan husky too & she's pretty much wired to the moon, but an awesome sled dog. These types tend to excel at all canisports

A friend of mine had a podenco, (rescued) the cutest little dog but really nervy & cannot be off lead at all due to high prey drive. I’m sure there will be others who do not have this issue but they are quite notorious for that type of behaviour.
