ok so just saved enough pennies this month to buy my point two which i planned to buy last year!
the only thing is im scared to use it! what happens if i get of without unclipping it?
my horse is very VERY sharp and worried ill jump of and it will go off and scare the living day lights out of him!
also what if i fall off slowley and he spooks as it goes of and makes the fall worse?!!?
ive wanted one for sooooo long and now ive got it i havent worn it!

I have a hit-air and a nervous horse. So far I have forgotten to unclip myself about five times before dismounting. I haven't set the jacket off once. But I dismount gently, no Frankie style leaping! ;) :D

I got off my 15.3hh with it clipped on and it didn't go off so I managed to scramble back on and unclip while I was hanging off the side!

I got off my 18hh horse with it clipped on and the cannister went off- horse was only a 4yro at the time and he just looked at me slightly bemused about why I had exploded!

My little horse was very reactive to noise (wore ear plugs at competitions to help) and she was actually fine when it went off while we were xc schooling- I thought she would disappear but its really not that loud and I think the sound is lost slightly with all of the excitement of falling anyway.

I've dismounted my 16.2 with it still on (and first time of wearing it!) and it didn't go off, mainly cos I think the saddle strap was too loose and i kept very near his saddle when dismounting.

I've been told its just like a can of Coke being opened, so you could practise that near your horse and decrease the distance between you and the horse?

But tbh, I think you'll be fine. Good luck !

I regularly dismount off my 15.1hh (chunky moo) while still very much attached to my saddle via my hit air. So far *touchs wood* I've not set it off so no idea on noise but I have a similar fear to you in that she's rather sharp and if it goes with a bang as loud as the P2 did on the trial, not only will I wind myself so badly I have to let go of my horse, but I'll also have to catch her again when she legs it after thinking someone's shooting at her! Over active imaginations R us I think in my case :p

We have the point 2 we had it demonstrated in the shop before we bought it the it went off with an extremely loud bang similar to a shotgun made us all jump

yes ! thats why im worried i had it done on me in the shop and it was so loud made me jump feet! so was slightly worried about what my horse would think of it!.........

My daughter has a P2 and it did sound loud in the demo but I put that down to it being indoors As someone has already said I don't think it would sound as bad outside.

I am little concerned though at all those who have said they have jumped off without unclipping and it's not gone off. Doesn't that sort of defeat the object?

That's a good idea.
I agree that the sound they make is very similar to that of a shotgun - I have a hitair and haven't managed to set it off yet, but I witnessed someone coming off their horse quite recently - they were wearing a point 2 when their horse spooked, she lost balance, and fell onto the road. The bang made everyone around jump, but strangely the horse didn't seem bothered by it and just wandered over to the grass verge.
I have to admit that i'm also worried about the bang going off if I fall, as my mare is very sharp and I don't think she'd be as tolerant - but saying that, she'd probably panic at me coming off anyway so it probably wouldn't make a huge amount of difference.
(ps - if you search on youtube for point 2 demos, you can hear the bang!)

I have got off of my horse without unclipping and it didn't go off. He is 15.2 and I sort of slide off so stay very close however I would hope if I did leap off a la Frankie it would indeed go off. I used to get off my 14.3 without unclipping occasionally and it still worked when I actually fell off.

Not at all. It is designed to come apart above a certain force. If you dismount gently and have a short horse or a pony, you wont set it off as the lanyard wont be pulled free from the jacket. If you fall off, lots of force is involved and the lanyard comes free, thus inflating the jacket.

Just imagine if it had a hair trigger and it went off every time you turned to talk to someone, or got a bit left behind when your horse overjumped an obstacle?

Get some very bright/neon tape or vet wrap and wrap it around the bottom and top of the cord. Then when you look down it will remind you to unclip. Also my 5yo,15hh quite spooky mare wasn't bothered when I fell off, she just looked at me very puzzled.

Dismounting without unclipping shouldn't set it off as it requires some 50lb of force to trigger it.

I think you can try "training" your horse with that "popping" sound when the air jacket goes off: try opening a can of fizzy drink over and over again. I have been told the noise is very similar to the jacket going off.

I understand why you don't want to wear it. My instructor doesn't like me wearing it and she says it would scare the horses if it goes off. You just never win!!!

I have a Hit-Air by the way.

Never had a hit air inflated around me, but the P2 is definitely not anything resembling a can of coke opening. P2 is more of a shotgun as someone else mentioned above.

I know this thread is old but I've only just seen some of the replies
I would just like to point out that I didn't say 'dismount gently'. I said 'jumped off'. There's a difference.
