I thought everyone on the yard was being a bit OTT tying wheelbarrows up with bike locks. Now I understand why. Arrived tonight to find mine just left like this:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

It had straw in which I don't use so clearly someone had decided to 'borrow' it, knacker it and then just dump it

I can't believe how rude and disrespectful some people are of other people's property. I know it might seem petty but I am really furious and not thrilled at having to buy a new barrow :(

Sorry for pointless rant, just needed to let off steam!

Similar story here am afraid.

Someone borrowed my wheelbarrow burst the tyre and then had the cheek to leave the wheelbarrow outside my stable as if to say "your barrow needs fixing".

What hurts the most is that i have been on my yard for years and thought the other owners were my friends, well obviously not eh! :(

I would be absolutely FUMING!

I came to the yard one night to find my bridle with the reins through the throat lash (which I never do, drives me up the wall), and the noseband broken!!!:mad:

Who do people think they are??

I wouldn't mind someone borrowing it, but if you break something you own up and offer to pay for it! That's what I was brought up to do, anyway.

Plus, it's not like a new wheelbarrow is going to be cheap :(

Hate the idea of keeping everything under lock and key, but it seems my trust of people was missplaced!

Money is very short this month but luckily my lovely boyfriend has offered to buy me a new one tomorrow, so will be getting a lock too!

Disrespectful bathplugs indeed!!!!!!

I would be LIVID with that and someone would have to receive a slap from me for that sneakiness.

Time to find yourself a new Yard?!

I got to the yard today after bathing my boy to find my brand new fleece had gone walkies out my box, which had a padlock on it until it 'broke' no one knows a thing apparently very annoying, not as annoying as the Jeffries bridle that went missing last week though!

Oh god, I feel for you, I bet you are raging!

People used to use mine, and then just leave it full of their horses carp, at random points of the yard. Bearing in mind muck heap is about 10 steps away.

In the end I wrote a VERY to the point message on it, telling them in no uncertain terms NOT TO USE IT. Have to say it worked ;)

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is out of order!

Maybe some people don't see a wheelbarrow as important but it is for me and I can't afford to keep replacing them.

Some people on the yard just don't seem to have any concept of money or having to SAVE UP to buy things

I'm worried now though as in my initial fury I wrote a note on the shared whiteboard asking whoever did it to own up. Not a great idea as they are unlikely to come forward and now I just look bitchy and petty for writing the note :(

Fairly typical I'm afraid! I couldn't find my sharer's (bright pink!) fork yesterday.

Years ago when I left a livery yard (also riding school) I couldn't find my double bridle. I went back to get it and they said they hadn't seen it but I could go and look. I found it shoved down the back of the school horses' feed bins, adjusted for a larger horse than mine.

I also lent my SIL my stirrup leathers while she got hers mended, when I asked for them back they were stiff and mouldy (she didn't have them very long!).

Hopefully whoever it was missed you today and they will approach you tomorrow (I am an optimist lol)

Can you fix it? the wheel came off my barrow but a couple of bolts bought for less than £1 fixed it. Not that you SHOULD have to sort it out yourself but its worth a try

I'd be right p****d off, in fact I'd write on the communal notice board if you have one that "the person who broke my wheelbarrow have the decency to own up & buy me a new one!!"

I did do this but now I'm regretting it as it will probably cause gossip and an awkward atmosphere! Whenever I try to be assertive it just ends up with me looking a bitch, even though I'm the one being screwed over!

I'm now on a small yard with no probs like that thank god

old yard was a different story, I had to padlock my stables as the amount of times I turned up at the yard to find either horses in my stables or haylage eaten or stables full of **** and I'm very carefull at mucking out.
Some people, it's not on and wheelbarrows aren't cheap

How awful! Why do people think it's OK to just 'help themselves'!? This is valuable gear and I doubt they would just wander into someone's house and just take things :(

My hubby built me a large box big enough to keep my barrow in as well as everything else & I kept it locked when we did DIY. I got fed up with things going missing/ being borrowed never to be seen again.

Thats terrible, I would be very angry too. Hope you find out who broke it and get the opportunity to give them a good mouthful, disgusting thing to do to a fellow livery.

I had a horrible livery on my yard who turned up with no mucking out equipment so I told her she could use mine until she got sorted, of course she never bought anything. She really annoyed me by always rushing to grab the wheelbarrow when she saw me heading towards the yard and holding onto it even if she wasn't ready to use it, just to stop me from using it before her. Drove me bonkers...she didn't last long anyway, I eventually summoned up the courage to tell her to leave........some people are just too much trouble.

Its a pretty sad state of affairs when horse people need to lock their wheelbarrows up, mad!

Thanks, yeah I might try to fix it! Annoying as it is, will be cheaper than having to pay my boyfriend back for a new one.

lol at this cos this is how I feel when say something(verbal or on board)
You ARE right to be annoyed and shouldn't feel bad about board message.

I don't envy you all. We are very lucky to have our own private land / yard - just us. Don't think I could cope with being on a livery yard!

I think I need to look long term into a set up like this. It just spoils my enjoyment of spending time with my horse having to worry about who's pinching or breaking my stuff!

Casinosolo - first of all don't worry of being thought a bitch you simply do not borrow someone's things without asking & secondly if you do & break it you confess & cough up. Personally, I wouldn't give a flying f@@@ if I was thought I was a bitch in this situation

Yep, I'm going to do the same! Is a shame when it has to come to this but if that's all that works to keep people's grubby mitts off, then so be it!

It's like being back at uni again in a shared house where we all had to label our milk!! I'm nearly 30 years old now and not standing for it anymore!

Thanks! Yes, I think I need to stop worrying about being seen as a bitch. Maybe that's the only way to get any respect for me, my horse and my property!

Smart water perhaps? Not sure how expensive it is, but if it proves to be a deterrent then I would go for it. So glad I have my own yard and feel for you - hope you manage to sort it out!

People keep nicking my mucking out stuff: I found my broom had been stood on by the horse today and bent (metal handle) because someone had put it back in the wrong place and he'd knocked it over and stood on it. Pees me off that this has happened twice in two days and the horse is on box rest so someone has gone in, moved him over and taken my stuff!

I have also just discovered a crime that is at least 2.5 years old.

My old lad was PTS 4 weeks before I had my daughter, I hadn't ridden since finding out I was pregnant. When I cleared his things out of the yard I could barely look at it and valuable stuff was put into storage at home.

I cleaned his bridle over the summer and noticed some odd wear/vermin/??? damage to the rubber Equus reins. I cursed myself a little for not storing them more carefully, cleaned them and put them away. Earlier this month I decided to sell some bits and bobs, including this (rather nice) bridle. I cleaned it again, decided I could not sell the reins but I would let the potential purchaser see them and she could have them at no extra cost if she wanted them. As I took them to the car (the first time I had seen them in natural light for a couple of years) I noticed they looked odd. They are NOT MY REINS!! Mine are black, these are havana and slightly narrower than mine!! Some @£$% has swapped my lovely reins when they were hanging in the communal tack room. I was really upset, nothing I can do, no idea who obviously and too much time has passed but as someone else has said, I thought my fellow liveries were my friends. Karma may well bite them on the behind!

Sorry, that was really long once I started venting!

Could have been much worse for the horse due to someone else's thoughtlessness if, say the horse had stood on the pitch fork instead!

God reading all these replies some people are horrendous! I wouldn't dream of taking and using someone else's stuff without asking!!
I feel even more lucky to on my livery yard, no one takes anyone else's stuff and you always find your stuff where you left it!
OP I wouldn't worry about the message on the board either. It's a bl@@dy cheek someone did it in the first place and I'm sure others get annoyed as its probably happening to others :(

when id just brought a brand new bottle of cleaning shampoo for greys (as i was trying to sell her) i left it in her stable went for a ride and someone had poured it down the drain!!
also when i moved to the field i had 3 break ins!
a friend of mine lent a rug to someone and then they sold the horse... WITH the rug... i mean come on it wasnt yours in the first place?!?!
