Have noticed that there's a lot of this nasty stuff growing up at the moment: it seems to be particularly virulent this spring and we've noticed some growing in the hedge of the field where to our knowledge the stuff has NEVER grown before.

For guidance on how to spot it/recognise it, feed "hemlock" into the search facility on here as there's a lot of stuff already on here (sorry don't know how to post the link). Also Google very helpful - there's a veterinary place in Kentucky where they've got some very helpful info on how to spot it. Its VERY easy to confuse with Cow Parsley, but basically Hemlock has got hollow stems and very easy to spot once you know, coz it has purple/port wine coloured blotches on the stems. Nasty stuff.

Anyone else noticed it?

Any ideas for eradicating??

Yes I had a lot of this in my field last year & it seems to have spread and it has popped up again. I would grazon 90 it. But unfortunately it will kill everything else except grass(we have lots of bee loving weeds this year too ie White nettle etc). Mine has never munched on it before and left it alone last year.

It has very broad leaf(like a huge Oak leaf). And the stem as it gets older has little lines running up its length.

Good luck just get some Grazon 90 and follow instructions. (I would keep horse off area sprayed for min 3 weeks or longer until it really has a good rain).
