there is a pole competition near me in a couple of weeks - we had a go a a local mini one and christmas as my boy loved it (I thought it was fun too) so I am tempted to go. However, I have never been to a "proper" one before - the one we did had cones to weave in and out of, poles you had to stop halfway over, jump wings to squeeze through on a slalem and time penalties for being too fast or slow.

Does anybody know what else I will have to do? AND has anyone been to the ones at Newton Hall - are they OK?

Ha ha yep I've done them there! You do a course of trotting poles (like a show jumping course but poles on the ground) and get a mark for each pole (whether you go over the middle of the pole etc). Highest score wins. Not timed. Yours sounds much more fun!

Taken my baby to a few much to the amusement of the people watching as he's refused to go near them or reversed over them cos he doesn't want to go forwards!! Completely shown up by the kids doing it!

They normally have wings each side of their poles, have had a narrow pole/s (like a stile), 3 in a row, 3 or 4 as a fan shape, some white poles positioned as a zigzag which you have to walk through (very narrow and away from home, bit cruel)

Generally a bit slow on their timekeeping
