Before I bite the bullet and actually spend some darn money on the paint any last advice on the type of paint?

Some on here recommend masonry paint - why? Is it better than standard wood gloss? If masonry is the bees knees then does that alter what undercoat I should use?

Any offers of actual pole painting will be met with glee and the absolute assurance that the old barn they're waiting in won't be drafty at all ;)

I cant see why you would put masonry paint on wood... good old gloss will do the trick, and is probably a lot cheaper...

Currently painting 12 pairs of wings & 30 poles so I feel your pain! I used 2 coats external undercoat (b&q own) and now glossing with dulux indoor & exterior gloss, going on well and due to the under coat not having to rub down & do second gloss coat.
Happy painting :-)

Gloss wood paint it is then... and a whole lot of undercoat.

Many thanks for this all of you.

I don't have quite as many jumps or poles so you have my sympathies! :)
