Police dog handler trial

I just said this in soapbox too, but I just wanted to say that this is an ongoing case so we need to take care, I daren't say what I'd like to until it's all over and done with

I hope this doesn't sound patronising as it isn't meant to at all but I would just hate to see the case affected, I feel strongly about it too but it is important that we take a bit of care until it's all done.

Sorry

I've just read that he got a conditional discharge and £2500 fine. Can I swear yet!

Go ahead - I am!!!!

Im staggered to be honest. They say the guy isnt/wasnt well....so if he wasnt capable of looking after the basic needs of two dogs what the hell was he doing at work???

I'd thought I read somewhere at the time this happened that he wasn't actually working but had just 'popped in' for a meeting or something. That would sort of explain it, but I can't find that written anywhere so I have no idea if that was true or not?

I hope he gets the sack.

Depression and OCD of which a side effect is forgetfulness (sp)? apparently.

I've been depressed most of this winter but do I forget to tend to my animals - no. What a load of crap.

So mad about this. Using 'depression' as a reason is disgraceful. He should have admitted full responsibility and suffered the consequences. As said if he was suffering these halth issues why was he still working and why was he allowed to be looking after these dogs??

Wonder how it would have differed had it been his child he left locked in the car?! To me it's the same - leaving an helpless animal to die like that is just unforgiveable in my mind.

May have to give my viewpoint later (when I've left work) to the BBC.

I am appalled!

Yes its shocking, they are saying he showed up fit to work so one imagines he only has selective depression and OCD, the sort that comes on when faced with criminal charges.

Its never going to change until animals are better protected under the law.

If you accept the reasoning that he genuiniely forgot the dogs were there, surely the dog he still has is at risk of him "forgetting" that too. Another point that concerns me is that it seems it would have been alright if the dogs had been transferred to an ac police van and left for 7 hours. Is it just me who thinks that is far too long to be confined to a vehicle?

No you're not alone - that was my view too! I just can't believe he's claiming that his mental issues caused him to neglect these dogs and yet he's obviously certain that his Labrador is not at risk!

It's an absolute disgrace, I saw the 2 dead dogs on the news last night and it was horrid.

Exactly MM - I wouldn't leave my dogs unattended in my house for 7 hours, let alone a car.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE - plain & simple, he's doing all he can now for the sympathy vote. I didn't know he had another dog, that should be removed
