Poor Zoe, but hopefully it’s testament to Merseyside police compassion for their working dogs and to Zoe’s handler who recognised she was suffering the after effects of the violent disorder she was subjected to and are allowing her an early (and hopefully stress-free) retirement.
I can’t see why dogs (or horses) were used in policing a riot, with missiles being hurled at them. They can’t hide behind riot shields.
From the Liverpool riots:- Three police dogs have also been injured. Police Dogs Zoe and Ike have sustained leg injuries from bricks thrown at them. A third dog, PD Quga, who was bitten, strangled and kicked by an offender at the beginning of this month, has tonight suffered burns to her back leg.
I knew an ex police dog many years ago that had retired to friends of the family. He was injured during the miners strike, the miners and families had kicked and beaten seven types of sh!te out of him during a protest. He had broken legs, ribs and a fractured skull and other injuries I can’t remember after so long. I always wondered why he wasn’t put down as the injuries were quite extensive and he took a long time to recover. He appeared to have a decent retirement with the friends but I always thought he looked on edge when there were more people than usual round the yard. It is one of the reasons I find it difficult to have any sympathy for the miners to this day.
