I hope they throw the book at them! But of course they wont!!

My dog comes to work with me and at the moment she has the window open and two fans on her - she's lovely and cool!!

shouldn't this be classed as murder of 2 police officers? When a 'criminal' attacks a police dog thats treated as attacking a police officer.

words fail me.

I'm shocked & disgusted! I've just tried looking for an email address for Notts Police to voice my opinions on this matter but can't find one, I guess a letter will have to do!

The scary thing is that the moron who left the poor animals in the car in this heat is charged with looking our safety! Scary.

I hope they throw the book at them - if it was Joe Public something would be done, why should it be any different for them?

Idiots - I can think of stronger words but I don't think I can use them on here!

happened with a vets dog at the vet school a couple of years back, you think they'd know better too...........

I'm utterly shocked, those poor dogs

what anyone was thinking leaving them in the vehincle for a few minutes let alone half an hour I don't know.

I would like to give the police the benefit of the doubt though, there is a small chance the vehicle should have been cooled but the system broke? Not sure how high tech the van they use are but hopefully the truth will come out.

Perhaps, but, and I could be mistaken with this, I believe that most air-conditioning units require the engine to be running and who would leave a van running for half an hour?
It would be nice to give them the benefit of the doubt but I rather feel that it's just a case of complete idiocy and unfortunately the poor animals were the ones to suffer.

It absolutely sickens me to think that this kind of thing happened. Those poor dogs, I have a german shephard and he is so hot at the moment even though we have had him clipped, we keep him in the garden and i bought a paddling pool for him yesterday from Argos, so everytime he gets to hot he goes in and lyes down to cool off!!

used to have a "failed" police dog- slung out for being too soft.

these stories always make me feel very sad thinking that could have been him, if he hadn't been such a sweetie.

It has been referred to the police complaints, but still they wont get what they deserve for doing this!
Absolutly disgusting, that this could happen at police HQ, its not like they were out on a shout and got forgotten about.
Another thing is how much public money went into the training of these dogs!
Yet again the police have let somebody/thing down.

QR - I have told hubby to allow our dog the run of downstairs while it's hot so she can get to a cool place - this is at the risk of her eating the sofa! I'd rather replace the sofa than try to replace the my little girl!

I have refrained from posting yet but some of these replys are too much.

There is absolutely no information in that report as to how this came about. Dog handlers are extremely close to their animals, they rely on them for their lives at times. They have very close relationships and no doubt the handler/s involved will be completely distraught.

The vans they use have the air con facilities & fans, how does anyone on this board know the type of vehicle facility or the exact circumstances. The unit could have been left on and broken down. There are people who hate the police so much they would shut the doors if they had been left open. We just don't know what happened.

Yes it is truely awful and I cannot imagine what those dogs went through but please do not jump to conclusions.

With the amount of flack they KNOW they will take for this if it had been a faulty air-con unit don't you think that would have been in the statement issued by the police?
I don't hate the police, in fact I wanted to be a police officer but this is completely horrendous and I hope that the handler does feel terrible because the dogs didn't just die they died a horrific death!

I don't think that anyone has suggested that police dog handlers are not close to their animals or do not look after them in general, but this incident is appalling.

The article seems to suggest that someone called the RSPCA to report the dogs which seems to suggest the local police were not even aware the dogs were dead which makes me wonder how long they had left the animals in the car. Also the ICPP has already sent the case back to the police to investigate which also seems inappropriate given the gravity of the offence (they didn't even wait for the results of the postmortem).

Concluding that there was negligence in the care of these animals does not seem that unreasonable and if there was some very reasonable excuse, e.g. air-con failed, why aren't the police saying so?

Having just caught the back end of the Jeremy Vine piece I have to say accident or not the handler should be brought to book & be made to pay for his/her actions and pay big.
A qualified vet has said it's a terrible death due to the chemical reactions in the body.
There's no defending this I'm afraid, it was wrong 100% even if it was unintentional in which case it's gross stupidity.
Poor dogs, R.I.P.

Even worse IMO...the dogs were on a 'day off', they could have been left at home instead of being taken into a metal oven. Terrible.

I'll watch this with interest as I'm not sure the repercussions will be the same as it would be for you or I...
