Police Dogs Die In Car - You would think they'd know better!!!

[ QUOTE ]
I don't think that anyone has suggested that police dog handlers are not close to their animals or do not look after them in general, but this incident is appalling.

The article seems to suggest that someone called the RSPCA to report the dogs which seems to suggest the local police were not even aware the dogs were dead which makes me wonder how long they had left the animals in the car. Also the ICPP has already sent the case back to the police to investigate which also seems inappropriate given the gravity of the offence (they didn't even wait for the results of the postmortem).

Concluding that there was negligence in the care of these animals does not seem that unreasonable and if there was some very reasonable excuse, e.g. air-con failed, why aren't the police saying so?

Booboos I accept it could well have been negligence, but generally the police won't make any comment til its been investigated. I just hate the way everyone instantly jumps to conclusions.

However if the dogs were in a private car as AmyMay has said, I suspect it will be a different matter depending on whether the officer was officially 'on duty' or not.

Do the police use their own private vehicles for work purposes? If not then I think it's safe to say the dogs were 'off duty' along with the officer...?

Yes.
Eg if they are on the way to work, they are classed as on duty.

I see! I didn't notice that they were in a private car, but are they not still police dogs and the responsibility of the police to look after properly whether on or off duty?

Yes and Yes.

If the officer & dog were on their way to work & classed as 'on duty' then you would think the officer would have got the dogs out of his own car and put them in the kennels as soon as they arrived, as it was the start of their shift.
Just found this and it does state that the officer was not on duty & had just called in...

As I said in previous post, my own personal feelings are that there's no defending this, I don't expect everyone to agree but no one will change my mind.

I'm not defending the handler if he was negligent - yes he should be prosecuted as anyone else would be.

However there is a lot more information available now than there was at the start of this post. Just seems to me there were judgements before the facts were clear.

I am appalled. These are the people who come out when a member of the public leaves a dog in a hot car!!!!!!!

Unbelievable! There has been so much publicity about dogs in hot cars over the years that I can't believe anyone would still do this.

My dog usually comes to work with me every day in the car, but lately I've been leaving him at home. It's just not fair to have him in the car, even though I am generally on farms and can leave the car in the shade with all windows and sunroof open - it's still been too hot.

I can't believe this to be honest - how irresponsible can a person be! If it had have happened to a member of Jo Public we would be in prison by now!
