My friend has a five year old dutch warmblood who is 18hh easily maybe more she didnt expect him to grow so big and she really cant cope he is a nice horse but he knows he can get away with things with her and she is getting too worried about riding him etc as he is so big although he is well bred etc no one wants him he looks like a police horse and she is thinking of approaching them but would they buy him or would she have to donate him? Well done if you got this far! Thanks

I think they do buy them, they were interested in a friend of a friends horse. They had him on trial but then decided he wasn't suitable. She should just get in touch won't hurt to see if they wanted him.

Oh ok she wasnt sure as she paid alot for him and alot to have him schooled so she didnt really want to give him away! I'll let her know thanks!

They will pay Market Value for a suitable horse. Suitabiity will be decided by a trial.

The MP's idea of market value may not be what your friend has in mind. She may need to take a loss if they feel the horse is suitable. Most MP sections are on a tight budget.

When West Mid's had horses in the mid 90's they used to pay about £4-5K for a nice 4 year old. At the end of the day they know many animals remain in work into their late teens so they get their money's worth. They really used to favour the ID/TB crosses but would look at other types. Temperament and soundness were top of the wish list I would say and they did take horses for assessment before purchase.

Other than the police force there is a market for horses this size, gents horses / hunters for instance and I have a friend that had an 18hh horse as she is 6ft 1 and has incredibly long legs so always goes for tall horses! Even if he isn't suitable for the police I'm sure there'll be a market for him.

Thanks everyone she kinda wants to get rid of him quick that sounds awfull but she just cant cope with his size and he takes the mick with her which is knocking her confidence so the longer it goes on the worse it is for both of them!
