The problem was that the Police were not anticipating a riot, so the horses were deployed in "light" crowd control tack (knee guards and face visors). If they had been in full riot protective armour there would not have been a problem and outcome would have been very different, i.e. the perpetrator flat on his back with a dent in his skull the shape of a long riot baton.

a bit of a sensationalist title for this thread, the paper does not say the horse was injured (that i saw), the horse was (aledgedly) punched.

the rider does not look to be helping the situation, and if i had a horse barging into me I would probably punch it too-who knows from this picture if the horse was barging him or if he had gone to the horse.

sensationalist c##p

There is no "allegedly" about it. The horse was punched - fact.

Presumably the man in the football shirt had a cold face, hence why we was wearing a scarf around it and not in any way to hide his identity during a riot.

It doesn't matter that the horse wasn't injured its the fact that that stupid football thug even tried it , god bless those horses the mounted branch should be really proud of there horses and all the hard work that goes into training these beautiful bombproof horses !
I for one would have just let those idiots get on with it !
More importantly however a poor disabled boy has been left with burns after someone threw a flare at this Match and it landed in his wheelchair , that to me is more newsworthy I'm pretty sure it would take more than a punch to bring down bud the horse!

Apparently so! For the fact that the guy puched a police horse clearly shows a lack of intelligence so I wouldn't be overly surprised if he genuinely thought he could take a horse out with one punch.

It was a absolute disgrace, im embarrassed to say im from the North East when things like this happen!!
Although im from Sunderland, not Newcastle :)
(so not all that embarressed)

No doubt the horse is fine. I follow West Yorkshire Police Horses on twitter, and they've been tweeting plenty of pics of him looking as good as ever, no reports of any noteworthy injury.

I think he's a shire x, no doubt it'll take more than a single swing from an idiotic thug to bring him down!

What an ignorant comment.

I saw the whole thing from my office window and what a bunch of uneducated football halfwits they were. Watching what happened I really didn't see what benefit the mounted section had on this situation. I'm not a fan of having horses in the police anyway, no matter how well trained they are, hooligans are hooligans regardless of whether there's half a ton of horse in front of them or not, they were still pelted with smoke bombs, shouted at and punched and why should they? The situation wouldn't have been any worse if mounted were not there.

I agree with you here, and I'm sure the scum will get away with a pat on the head, shame he didn't get kicked in the head by that tonne of horse.

I like the horses going out and bashing the hooligans out the way. I would prefer the police to invest in a water cannon though, no-one likes being cold and wet.

''Northumbria police confirmed that a fan captured on video allegedly trying to punch a horse had been bailed today pending further inquiries.''

the above is a direct quote from the article this thread is about, it does not state it is fact that this horse was punched it states 'allegedly trying to punch'

and it does not state the horse was injured, my post was more to highlight the idea that what you see in a picture is not always the whole story

I'm sure I read somewhere that whilst on duty police horses and dogs are afforded the same rank as police officers, therefore the thug should be prosecuted with assaulting an officer.

Or is that the USA? Hope it is over here.

If its not then he should be pooped on by the whole mounted police team (horses as well!!)

I love police horses. We don't live far from hough end in Manchester and always see them out and about! :-)

Ive just watched the police horse punch on the news again and its a pathetic looking punch, possibly too drunk to hit the target maybe? Horse does not rear in pain as Ive read in the papers, he doesnt seem to even notice the wolly. Not that Im condoning what was going on at all. It does seem to have been sensationalised. I feel more sorry for the disabled lad who had a firework thrown on him by the away fans.

Jools2345, you thug, you are clearly in the wrong forum. ;)

Whatever happened to the great British sense of proportion?

Yes, the report was sensationalized. Yes, they were thugs. I don't see any contradiction between these two statements.

That's interesting. I must admit to having reservations about the use of horses as an aid to public order myself.

It was a "nothing" incident from what I make of it. A pathetic attempt by an idiot that the horse shrugged off. It is just cannon fodder for the media to be able to highlight the bad side of something yet again. We rarely hear stories about the vast majority of perfectly well behaved football fans...but the papers and news LOVE telling us about the bad. I actually can't stand football, but I still know it is only a small minority of fans that are this bl00dy stupid.

I am not a massive fan of horses in the police, but their effectiveness cannot be denied as can be seen on many youtube videos.

I just wish in this instance, a horse wasn't being used to give yet more column space to the kind of idiots that really don't deserve it.

Want to stop all the riots/terrorism/stupidity in the world? Stop broadcasting it and giving this scum a platform to boost their egos from.

Turn to the sports section of a tabloid newspaper and even a broadsheet. There will always be football stories and many mention the fans.

Are you suggesting these people rioted in order to get in to the newspapers and that tf TV, radio and newspapers stopped covering terrorist attacks, they would still carry on? I agree they might exacerbate them, but I don't think your logic stacks up.

I agree with you. Whether we slap or punch a horse on the neck, it can hardly be termed an injury, and this is, yet again, a load of media spin, being attached to a possible offence, from which it's highly unlikely that the horse suffered, and again, I wonder at the actions of the rider.

A horse being used by a PO, for crowd control, is due a degree of respect, without question, but that is the extent of the crime. Be it the horse or the rider, the threat or the eventuality of an attack are quite rightly prosecutable, but for the media to whip up a frenzy over the horse being injured, is just nonsense.

What the media aren't sure of, they'll make up, and those who soak up every word of their offerings would benefit from being a little less gullible.

We now have the most dreadful bombings (?) in America, with static reporters piling speculation upon rumour, with permanent news coverage which is approaching being ghoulish, and all that the media are achieving is giving a platform to those who commit these atrocities. As everyone else I'm certain , my heart goes out to those who've died and those who are so mutilated.

Alec.
