There was just a report on the politics show about problem 'status' dogs in Liverpool. The council is trying to tackle this issue by creating specific park areas where dogs are allowed off leads and ban else where and try to tackle the owners of the dogs and not target specific breeds.

Thoughts? What else could they do?

In 3 years living in Liverpool I saw maybe 3 dogs that weren't staffies/bull types. I actually think bull breeds can be lovely dogs, but the sort of people we used to see out with these dogs made me cringe. I spent a year in a particularly rough part of Liv and there was a park opposite my house where I regularly saw young lads training their staffies to bite/hang off planks of wood.... I dread to think why they thought that would be a useful skill for the dog to have. I also saw a guy take his staffie up to a persons fence and taunt their GSD - the poor GSD was going mental (understandably with a strange dog going at him from the other side of the the fence) and the guy was literally egging his dog on.

Unfortunately, I'm really not sure how the issue can be resolved, short of licensing all dog owners - and even then, the sort of people who shouldn't have dogs are the ones who'll probably ignore any new laws.

I didn't think dogs were allowed off a lead in any park, at least I'm sure its not round here.
Target the breeders, not just owners, erm.. fines for dog fights, dog training classes for free to owners of specific breeds. I think thats all I can think of,

I grew up in Liverpool and I still work in the city centre. I agree that the vast majority of dogs in the city centre are of a pit bull type. There are parks that my mum wont go into, even in the much more affluent south of the city because of the problems with mostly young lads with imposing dogs that aren't under control.

But, she was dead against banning dogs off leads in parks as it was punishing her for the behaviour of other dogs. Also she thought that it would just be ignored anyway by the type of people that this would be aimed at. Her answer was just to ban all bull type breeds. hmmm not so sure about that.

IQ tests for potential dog owners?

Sorry, only half serious, unless you change the mindsets of people, there is not a lot you can do, they will want the latest 'cool' animal to show off with

Fine you if you dont have full liability insurance or u are able to produce it like u do when pulled over in your car or remove the dog till you can.
Not in fields but def in public park areas.
Must be over 18 to be in the park with your dog, otherwise if an incident occurs they will be claiming the "the dog was with a minor" excuse.

Alot of the chavs would not have insurance as it would cost a fortune, can u imagine if one the dogs Murph 88 suggests was able to run free in a park....it would be like blood bath

as with everything the majoriy have to suffer for the minority but if it saves dogs from being ravavged then so be it.

Or maybe pay an attendance fee to have some kind of dog control warden in the parks patrolling.....not sure how busy these parks get, I never actually got to dog parks
