I did it a while ago because of problems with my back and also to improve my dressage position. I found it really good, useful and also quite fun! It definitely made me more aware of when I wasn't straight (tilting pelvis to one side etc), but I can't say I found it that challenging - my abs never felt that challenged! Unfortunately my back problem has now worsened (not as a result of pilates which had been helping) so I can't do it now, but it's definitely something I would return to in the future as I'm sure it helps you be aware of your posture and misalignment etc.

I didn't pay for my class as it was inclusive of my gym membership.

I do it....it works wonders for my back, and my core muscles...yes I have found it helps my balance and position also.

I did it years ago...can't remember how much, but nothing major.

I started again recently, I don't go to classes but I bought a very comprehensive book and I pretty much remember a lot of it anyway, just nice to have a reference. Also- you can do it in private whilst having TV on

On the plus side, people keep asking me if I have lost weight...I haven't- just toned up and become more streamlined lol

Yes, started it at Christmas, partly because I wanted to improve my position (horse needs a LOT of help in canter) and partly to try and tackle an old back problem.
I go to a class once a week and also try to do some of the exercises from a DVD in between.
I am a lot more toned and stronger in the saddle, but I'm not convinced it's helped my back that much - Still can't stand for long periods and get very stiff after a long drive.
I suspect to make a big difference you'd need an intensive course or one to one coaching at least initially, but I'm glad to be doing it and will continue the classes.
Londonstudent - if your abs weren't challenged you weren't being taught properly!

I used to do it when I was a regular gym goer! I have a DVD now, but it isn't exactly worn out through over use......

It is probably the most useful non-riding exercise you can do to help your riding. I'd recommend it!

I find yoga helps with my back, although can be harsh on my knees (i have arthritis) I have often considered pilates and will be interested to see what people say. I also do Reiki which has been a god send.

I do yoga and pilates. I find the yoga helps to keep me bendy and is very beneficial to my back. It has also been very helpful with body awareness/straightness and balance.

My pilates classes are quite hard work...harder than I thought they would be as I imagined the physical effort would be about the same as yoga. Absolutely thrilled that they are quite hard though and they are really toning up my abs. Also extremely useful from the body awareness etc side of things. We go at the exercises pretty hard in my class and I am glad that I had done yoga beforehand so I already knew how to feel whether I was straight etc.

Pilates is £30 for 6 one hour classes, yoga is £6 for one and a half hours.

I started about 3 months ago with a Darcey Bussell DVD. I'm not one for organised exercise so I enjoy the freedom to do as much or as little of the exercises as I want, and I think it must help with core strength and stability. The full programme takes about 1 hour 20 mins - I usually manage about 1 hour, 3 times a week.

I voted yes, but confess to not having gone to classes for ages as I ran out of both time and money.

BUT one day when the situation's right for me once again, I will definitely be going back.

I thoroughly recommend pilates to anyone - not just to riders - as it's just so good for improving straightness, posture, improving body tone (without increasing muscle bulk) etc. etc. The most significant difference I noticed was that I showed far less of a tendency to collapse through the stomach (thus going round backed) when riding, due to the core muscles being much stronger and better able to do their job.

I love it. If my back hurts I do an hour of pillates and I am pain free!

I go to classes once a week - a fiver for an hour - and I do the Darcy Bussell DVD once or twice more (not the entire programme in one go, I do about an hour each time).

Yup costs £45 per term - works out to £7 a time, by paying up front it makes me more inclined to go!!
Found it's helped a lot with my back and neck which given that I seemed to land on my head a lot as a child is great.

I've only just started - am just finishing a brilliant 4-week intro course which was £40, am then going on to a half-term course which will be £7 per hour session, max 6 people in the class. In the spring my teacher is getting someone who does pilates for riding, so I'll def be there then!

It has already helped my hyper-extended neck and tendency to look down - think my lower back will take longer but I'm optimistic. You have to practise between classes though or there's really no point. I can't see how it won't help my riding - good core strength is at least half of an independent seat, after all.
