I have a set at the yard and a set in the horsebox! This is all because last summer I went off to a show and my mare pulled a shoe walking to the ring, twisted it and got a clip in her white line. I was on my own and had to ask passers by to help hold horse/run to secretary to ask if there was a farrier on site (none on official duty - large agricultural show so I was a bit surprised). They found a farrier who was visiting the show via the tannoy but he didn't have tools on him so I had to resort to the vet on call, £40 later my mare was minus the offending shoe. If only I'd had my tools in the box I could have sorted it all out in under 10 minutes with a lot less stress. Never again!

No and No, but am going to do both :)

its not something i've ever given much thought too if im honest despite having worked on many yards im ashamed to say - its not something my boss' have ever done either whih i am suprise about..

i must stop being so reliant on other people!

am going to ask my farrier next week when he comes to show me and get the tools

I have just been speaking to people at work who own horses, interestingly those who have barefoot horses seem to have rasp etc, and those who have shod horses don't own a thing!

also a couple believed their livery yard had a kit, but as i know the livery yard (it was one I called!) I know they don't.

Just wanted to say huge thanks AF - have being meaning to buy one for ages and one is being deivered today :) . My farrier has promised to show me next time how to use it in an emergency....

Yes have the tools and my farrier showed me how to remove a show properly, have removed several shoes both for myself and other people when they have been hanging off in a dangerous way.
