I was made to sell my "pony" (15hh) by my parents when I was offered a job as a live-in groom. The woman wouldn't let me bring my pony, and my parents refused point blank to have anything to do with the idea of putting her on loan, so I sold her to a man I knew from the riding school -who was retiring and wanted a horse to keep him occupied- then the woman who'd offered me a job gave my job to someone else because I'd "dithered", I'd a hospital appointment that delayed my start date by 24 hours -during which she found someone else.
So I was left jobless and pony-less, and I'd spent most of the money on new clothes and stuff for my job.
I think the man kept the mare till the end of her days
The kid who was given my job walked out after a week, and the woman phoned me to offer me my job back. Only she pretended she'd no idea who I was and she'd gotten my number from such and such agency (which was where she'd initially gotten my details) and she thought I sounded the part. If she'd had the common decency to apologise for ditching me I might have considered taking the job, but since she decided to BS me I told her I wasn't interested.

20+ years later, I'm somewhat sorry I didn't just shrug it off and take the job anyways...

Ah well

I kept my childhood pony until he unfortunately died of colic aged 27. You didn't have an option for me!

I'm a few months too young to vote but i have my 2nd and 3rd pony still.
1st pony - well - it was one that a friend and myself shared. I then got another (shetland) and after a while - as friends do - we fell out so i gave up my share of him. I then also got a 14.2 Section D - who over the years has come and gone but shes been back now for a few years - shes like a yoyo

I made a vow to my shetland - that we would be together until one of us dies - and i will keep that vow

When i have outgrown them, i have just added to the number - hence i have a few now lol !
Fingers crossed my twins - well at least one will show an interest in riding then my shetland will get a new rider !

Had to sell mine. My parents werent horsey at all and ponies had to be kept on livery, so for me to have a bigger pony then my 1st pony had to go, it make me sound quite hard but when i was a child i was sad selling him but i soon got over it with my new pony. I have more trouble selling now, i get too attached and upset over the whole buying/selling process.

I voted still have him, though actually he was put to sleep nearly 30 years ago. Still have my daughters childhood pony (daughter is 19 now) and will keep her to the end as she has Cushings.

My first pony was on loan and a complete s*d!!! He threw me off at 14 and I broke my arm in about seven places, nearly lost it, so my parents bought me a 2 yr old to play around with for a few years (wasnt allowed to ride for 2 years- Yeah, right!!!) Crispin was big enough for me to continue riding him when I was older as Im not particularly tall, so I was able to keep him forever! In hindsight I was incredibly lucky that C had such an easy temperament as it could have gone so badly wrong!!

First pony had to go back to loaner and was then sold so I suppose I didnt keep my very first one, but he wasnt really mine anyway!

Well, we kept Suzy till she died. To be honest I thought we should have sold her a few years ago. She was worth about 10x what we paid for her, but the main reason was that I wanted other kids to learn and have fun with her. She really was a mother's dream!

But my sister and mum were not as hard nosed as me and wanted to keep her forever! Now we have her son and there is no doubt he will be with us for the rest of his life.

I'm the same as BBs, never had a pony, my first horse was a 16hh WB at the age of 15....still got her 10 years later, she has a sharer now and mostly just hacks due to arthritis but we are going to possibly tackle the veterans showing circuit next summer! Then we got a pony after that, as a companion, and despite being sold once and out on loan twice she is another yo-yo pony and keeps coming up (really rude but my husband calls her a floater....just cant get rid of her! He loves her really, honest!) I'm hoping she will chill out enough in her age for our kids to ride her when we eventually have them, she's 15 now so got a few years left!
I'm honestly rubbish at selling horses on, still got every one we have ever bought, so got 3 horses and a pony now. Do try to loan (last 2 have both been on loan initially) but then they always seem to end up being for sale once we have fallen in love with them....funny that!

i only had loan ponies when i was little, got my first bought pony when i was 13 , and still have her!she has a home here for the rest of her days, am puting her in foal next year so i can have her babies forever after shes gone!

i bought buddie when i was 15 i paid for him with my b-day money!! i used to save my dinner money each week to pay for his rent and buy his food!

i could never sell him as would hate to think of him being mistreated, i dont think he would but i could never do it!!!!!!

All my ponies have been sold - what is the point of them hanging around when they can no longer do their job with us? We found the best homes for them and many of them are still going strong in the area.

I put option 2 as Topsy would have stayed to the end. However, mum died after having cancer when I was 15, and keeping Topsy and bringing up my 4 young brothers was too much so Topsy went to Ada Cole at the age of 33.

She lived until 38 and taught toddlers to ride, fostered a racehorse foal and I used to see her when she came back to the sanctury for the last couple of years.

At 11 I inherited my mum's 14.2 arab who was pts following a sudden illness at 26, 2 months before my mum - not the greatest time in my life. Again she would never have been sold on.

My first pony was sold after 6years when I had grown out of him and funded my first horse. He went to a lovely home and was v happy.

ETS - Rocks is my third horse, and he will most certainly have a home for life with me. There is no doubt in that. All the others were expendible, but Rocks most certailny is not.

As a child I had a pony on loan her owners requested her back to put in in foal, I was heart broken. Lady is the first pony I owned and I was 18 when I got her so I don't suppose she counts as a childhood pony but I still have her and never plan to get rid of her (she's on perminant loan from a rescue sanctury)

You didn't have a "Kept it till the end" box.

My first two ponies stayed till the end of their days.

My third pony retired with me, stayed here for a while, then her old owner wanted her back for a companion (We agreed this right at the beginning that one of us would be the last home) so I gave her back and some kids pootled around on her. She finished her days there.

From there on they became horses that I knew I would sell eventually. All except the one that I bred. He is staying with me till the end.

Everyone else would have a price tag.

Im 24 but still have my first pony who I got when I was 13. I could never bear to part with him after he gave me so many years of fun. Don't think I would have as much trouble selling on a horse now but its something to do with them being your first one.

Well Im almost 25 (Im 24!) so tough Im answering! My very first pony is still with me! He's now 20 and is pretty much retired, although I occassionally take him for a hack which is meant to be gentle - however he has galloped off with me a few times this year....! he's only 13.2hh as well....! Somehow its funny when something so small tanks off with me, if it were my 16hh TB x then I may not be laughing!

I suppose I should say that I sold him - but now 10yrs later I have him back for his retirement. I never advertised him, they came to me and pretty much trialed him whilst I was at Badmintion in 1997 (we camped). He went to live 2 miles down the road from the college where I was a student ATT, to do RDA riding and driving. The agreement was always that as soon as she thought he'd had enough, he'd come back to me and he has. I always stayed intouch via e-mail, esp. when I was in the US - got some fab pictures too. He's always been a major part of my life - if it hadn't been for him I would have gone to RADA.......hmmmmmmm how different my life could have been eh.........
